A LALA En {ADA . come to Canada in the first "society based on Set A ER To the "Star" Editor Dear Sir I .can sympathize with! those who feel they are being robbed of their heritage. How- ever, there comes a time when symbols no longer rep- resent reality. If we cling to externals to the point where they are no' longer relevant we - are "left with a, dead formalism instead of some- thing vital and inspiring. We have seen this happen in religion as well as in politics. Britain herself is changing and seeking her- destiny in new and untried ways, If our anc- estors had been 'afraid of change they would never have place. If Canadians of all ethnic backgrounds = would work together to evolve a equality, freedom and justice for all citizens then we shall have a country to be proud of what- ever symbols or political institutions we may adopt in the future. Yours truly Mary D. Mumford (Mrs.) "Dear Sir: I wish to congratulate the photographer who photo- graphed the results of vand- alism at Pine Grove Cemet- ary. I feel this is possibly the most poignant photograph ever printed by the Port Perry Star a ivie ..There she lies, flat on her back on the ground. And rising above her, in tiers, is the pedestal from which she was toppled - each generation taller (in ego) but smaller in dimension. I suspect that this is not the first time that such a misfortune has occurred in our community. I' have in my possession a carved marble head of a little girl. It was brought to me several years ago by Georgie Leach (I refer to him as "Georgie to dif- ferentiate between him and his father, the late George Leach), who' dug it up in Manchester Creek, under the bridge on County Road 1A. He saw the curls of her hair sticking up through the mud and thought he had discovered a strange fossil. This fragment of sculputre has been identified as being of imported Italian marble. Where did it come from and how did it end up in Man- chester Creek? Was it also an angel from Pine Grove Cemetery, the robbers of which got cold feet and heaved it over the bridge as they drove by? When will the citizens of this area develop a. respect for the past and cease to destroy what few vestiges of ---- News Ladies please remember!
