For Pollution Inquiry Appointment of a com- mission to inquire into alle- gations concerning the pollu tion of air, soil and water in the Townships of Dunn, Moulton and Sherbrooke in Haldimard County was an. nounced recently by Dr. Mat- thew B. Dymond, Ontario minister of health. The commissioners will be Dr. G. Edward Hall, recent- ly retired president and for- mer dean of medicine of the University of Western Ont. ario, who will be chairman of the commission; Dr. C. J. Mackenzie, recently retired chairman of the National Re- search' Council of Canada, and Alex McKinney, a farmer at Brampton, Ontario, and former president of the Ontario Federation of Agri culture. « The commissioners, Dr. Dymond said, have been ask- ed to "inquire into 'and re- port upon the pollution of air, soil and water" and "its effects upon human health, livestock, agriculture and horticultural crops, soil pro- ductivity and economic fact- ors" within the area. The appointment of the commission, Dr. Dymond said, had been made by the lieutenant-governor - in-coun- cil under provisions of the Public Inquiries Act of 1960. Evidence will be given under oath, and the commission is empowered to ask for the production of documents and other substantive evidence. Government departments, boards, agencies and com: mittees have been instructed to assist the commissioners "to the fullest extent possi: ble in order that they may carry out their duties and functions." Counsel and other staff will be engaged by the commission as re quired. Dr. Dymond said that the commission will start to work immediately and that the members have been made aware that the Government of Ontario considers this an urgent matter requiring a re: port as soon as the facts can be determined and reported upon. The minister of health also stressed that the com- mission will have a free hand to investigate the situation thoroughly. Meanwhile, Dr. Dymond said, the Ontario department of health, through its air pollution services and other health department facilities, would be conducting a con- tinuing study of air pollution in the area as it concerned possible effects upon humans while the commission was undertaking its general study.
