Robarts Announces Pollution Conference The Prime Minister, 'they, I Honourable John P. Robarts, announced today that a com- prehensive conference on pollution control will be held later this year. "The conference," he said, "will be organized by the Ad- visory Committee on Pollu- tion Control, a committee of Deputy Ministers established last October to co-ordinate all government pollution con- trol programs throughout the various departments involv- 'ed. Since its inception, this committee has made consid- erable progress in co-ordinat- ing the government's own de- partmental programs and has made a preliminary survey of non - governmental organiza- tions 'active in this field. "In order to establish a better two-way communica- tion with these latter groups, I have asked the Advisory Committee to organize a pro- vincial conference on pollu- tion control, to be held dur- ing the first week of Decem- ber. This conference will provide a comprehensive ap- proach - to environmental pollution . in all its aspects and will include the prob- lems of air, soil and water pollution in agricultural, in- dustrial and municipal con- "Of the many problems we ce today, those resulting from new technology are solve because we have no traditional solution to fall back on. One example of this is in agriculture, where manure disposal from large- scale poultry, hog and beef production is becoming a serious air and water pollu- tion problem. Accordingly, I propose to invite participa- tion in the conference by farmer organizations and, in fact. I have invited from these groups suggestions con- cerning the content of the conference. "This conference will dif- fer in several significant re- spects from the national con- ference held in Montreal last November. At that time, some 600 delegates from all parts of Canada, as well as other countries, met to dis- cuss pollution problems on a wide-ranging basis. The pro- vincial conference, as I vi- sualize it, will be smaller and more specific in its subject- matter. It will be concerned primarily with Ontario prob- lems and Ontario solutions. It will, I hope, pick up where off and take us a step closer in this Province to the ideal of adequate management of our environment for the benefit of all our people." perhaps the most difficult to' the Montreal conference left - tion for Mills hours.
