Dr. M. B. Dy- mond, provincial minister of health, declared the hall of- ticially open following a pro- gram of music and speeches. Seated on the platform were the guests, Dr. Dymond, Edward Oyler, reeve of Reach; Charles Healy, Ont- ario County Warden; Grant Christie, former warden and reeve; H. L. Fair, agricultur- al representative and Mr. Larry Doble, deputy-reeve of Reach. Mr. Stewart MacFar- lane was chairman for the occasion. The Reach Centennial Choir under the direction of Mrs. Sanderson sang several numbers at the beginning of the program and were warm- ly commended for their ef- forts by all speakers. i Mr. Hugh Baird contribut- ed with two solos and later was joined by Mrs. Baird in a duet. Mr. Thomas Sharpe was a soloist, also, singing My Ain Folk. _The guests extended greet- ings from their various com- munities and praised the for- ward thinking residents of Reach Township in preserv- ing the old church as a com- munity hall. It was Mr. Grant Christie, however, who filled the au- dience in on events and dates relating to the township. He also stated that he had at- tended service in the church approximately 70 years ago. Reach Township,. he said, was named after a Col. Reach the first settler in the Town- ship. The first child was born in 1821. The first school was built in Prince Albert in 1929 and at one time it was the larg- est village in the Township. [t is said that before the first railway was built to Port Perry, there was more grain bought and sold in Prince Albert (other than in Brampton) of any place in the province. A plank road populations as 134 in 1831; 6009 in 1871 and 3404 at the present time. Reach became a township in 1850, built its first church at Prospect and Greenbank was once known as Smith- town. Dr. Dymond who address- ed many of his remarks to the many young persons pre- sent spoke of the first sett- lers, plank roads built out of necessity, of pine torches be- ing more common than tal- low candles. Now we have advanced from shanks mare to jet propulsion, he said, and many New Canadians say that we have the best- filled garbage cans in the world. However, Dr. Dymond con- tinued, although man has walked in space, man has not caught the spirit of how to get along with his fellow man. - In opening the community Macht bad adsasis to Al hall, Dr. Dymond said he thought it most appropriate that this old church once de- dicated to the glory of God will now be used for christ- ian brotherhood. Use it, he urged, make it the focal point of your in- y ' . Ww . > 5 ATR 3 | ek p . SEATS IS LS Psi urs RE Ea heb miata oid Said dvs NR ARR EL LE terests, put it to the best possible use. Following the program, vi- sitors were invited to attend the antique display next door. The sports events were cancelled on Saturday to be re-scheduled this week but a dance in the hall at night drew capacity crowds. The teens danced in the basement and the adults upstairs. On Sunday an overflow congregation attended the church services when the Rev. Keith McMillan was guest minister, The "Centennial House" with its large display of re- lics & antiques will be open both afternoon and evening, Friday and Saturday for vi- sitors.
