Seated are two lady members, Laura Lakey and Lois Yorke. a dniaeddorstui chad mim waididotsivn basi | | | | Standing 2 Local Coupe Celebrate 40th Wedding Anniversary A most enjoyable evening was spent recently in the Odd- fellow's Lodge Hall, Port Perry, when about seventy-five friends 'and relatives of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Samells, Lilla Street, village of Port Perry. Their family consists of two girls: Jean, Mrs. Earl G. Bailey, and Donna, Mrs.. Bruce V. Mackey, both of Oshawa. There are three grandsons. Geer and Karen Kennedy. For the entertainment which followed, one of the couple's sons-in?law, Mr. Bruce. Mackey, acted as Master of Ceremonies. After his words of welcome to the guests, Jean and Donna, daughters , of = the - honoured couple, played a piano duet en- titled "Canadian Capers". This was followed by a humorous reading: given by Mrs. CIiff Love. The highlight of the programme, a mock -wedding arranged by Mrs. Ellsworth Kennedy, was a surprise to all, ~}even-these participants: bride== Mr. 'Aylmer Ploughman; groom --Mrs. Orr Jeffrey; bridesmaid -- Mr. Bill Mark; best man -- Mrs. Lloyd Hunter; flower girl --Mr. Cliff Love; ring bearer-- Mrs. W. J. Beacock. The solo- ists, Mrs. Bert Gray and Mrs. Ellsworth Kennedy, sang two selections during the ceremony: "Out behind dthe Barn" and "She's Alright at Night by. the Good Electric Light." They were accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Stanley Ploughman. Mrs. Edna Beckett, the flower girl of 40 years ago, played the wedding marches. Mr. Earl Bailey, another son-in-law - Port Perry, gathered to cele: brate the couple's 40th wedding anniversary. The former Alpha Gertrude Crosier, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Wright Crosier _ Manchester, and George Wesley Samells, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Walter S. Samells, Scugog, were united in marri- age at Manchester on February ~-12th, 1927 by Rev. Swain. For Further Information Call : BOWMANVILLE On their arrival,.the bride of forty years was presented with a corsage composed of an or- chid and sweetheart roses and the Groom was given a boutton- aire. All were invited inte the hall- for progressive euchre. Prize winners for the evening were: 1st lady--Mrs. Edna An- derson; 1st man -- Mr. Murray Wood; low lady -- Miss Linda Andrews; low man --Mr. Ron Kennedy. In charge of the guest book were Misses Brenda ACRE 628 - 5125, of Mr. and Mrs. Samells, wrote the script and played the part of the minister. The program- me concluded with two vocal selections "Melody of Love" and "Love Me Tender" by Mrs. Ellsworth Kennedy. Tar Mr. and Mrs. Samells were in- vited to the platform and Mrs, Aylmer Ploughman read an ad- dress to the couple on behalf of everyone assembled, Three ne- phews, Mr. Peter Crosier and Masters Kim and Jonathan Cro- sier presented the gifts to the Bride and Groom: an oil paint- ing, wall clock, crystal vase, ruby bowl and cushion. Mr. & Mrs. Samells expressed hearty thanks for the lovely gifts and to those who had worked to plan the evening. After singing, "For they are Jolly Good Fellows", everyone proceeded to the lower level for refreshments prepared and served by the Maybelle Rebek- 'ah Lodge of which the Bride and Groom are both members. Surrounded by their family, the couple presided over a table, centred with a two-tiered wed- ding cake, baked by their daughters. The table was also decorated with two crystal candlestick holders with ruby candles, the gift of the grand- sons Masters John and David Mackey and Craig Bailey, After the Bride and Groom served the wedding cake to their guests, a toast to the an- niversary pair for good health H.S.--K. The Worship Service on Christian Steward- ship was in charge of Mrs. Ted Legge. Others assisting were Mrs. Murray Holtby, Mrs. Les. Smith, Mrs. Bert Gray, Mrs. Lloyd Smith, Mrs. Clare Vernon Byron Holtby. © The Scripture lesson was Matthew 25: ws, 3146 and the hymn "Dismiss me not, Thy servant Lord". The president, Mrs. Clare Vernon, chaired the business session. The regular reports were presented. It was voted to forward our allocation to the Presbytery and money to the Flower Fund. A bale will be sent to Norway House, Man, in April and the annual bazaar will be held in May. Mrs. Booth has donated a quilt for it. A hymnary was presented to the past president, Mrs. Bert Gray, in recognition of her faithful services. Rev. Teskey closed the meet: ing with prayer. During the social hour a chinese auction was held. Total receipts for the meeting $24.52. Mrs. Vernon and her co-hostess, Georgeanne Legge and Tot Holtby, served refreshments. We were sorry to learn of the unitimely death of the late Mr. Jack Stevens of Toronto, one of our former men, active in Young People's Groups. Our sympathy to Mrs. Stevens and family, brothers Fred of Myrtle Station and Theodore of Man: chester. ' Our Best Wishes to Mr. Stan- cy Conlin, who is in Oshawa General Hospital, for a speedy recovery. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Holliday of Keswick were recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Vernon. Mrs. J. E. Holtby has been visiting relatives in Newmarket and Concord. Gro V of U.C.W., Marion Webster, "Helen Holtby, Nancy Fair and Mildred Dearborn held" a euchre par®¥ in the S. S. room. Mrs. Grant Williams and Mr. Cochrane won the high scores, Jack Holtby and Mrs. Lloyd Smith the consolation prizes. Manchester Mr. Robert Beacock has sold his house to Mr. Al. Bruce of Seagrave. Mr. Beacock and fa- mily are moving to Orono. Sympathy is extended to Mrs. F. Hedges in the death of her husband. Mr. and Mrs. Hedges 'were residents here, prior to moving to Brooklin. In spite of extreme cold, pan- cakes and sausages were served to eighty people on the evening of Shrove Tuesday. Mrs. Thorne and friend of "| Oshawa were guests-of -the for- mer's sister, Mrs. Aletha Holt- by, last week. Mr. and Mrs. A. Roach at- tended the convention of week- ly newspaper publishers at the Royal York on.the week-end. Remember the Valentine Tea in the school room of the 'church on Friday afternoon, Feb. 17th at 2.30. There will be a table of home baking. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Mitchell were Sunday dinner guests of News Mr. and Mrs. Bonin, Oshawa. Mr. and' Mrs. L. B. Roberts, Orillia were at their cottage here on the week-end and on Sunday motored to Kitchener to visit his father who is in hos- pital there. Mrs. Frank Way, Toronto was the guest of Mrs. Dolly Roberts on the week-end. Mrs. F. Johnson and Mr. Wesley Johnson were in Oak- ville on Monday. give...
