As the name suggests, this is a programme in which the member plays a more active role than in the case of regular Dairy Herd Improvement testing. Mem- bers weigh and record the weight of milk produced by each cow in the herd on suec- cessive evening and morning mikings once each month and at the same time take a sample from each cow's milk for but- terfat testing. A Dairy Herd Improvement Supevisor collects the samples and conducts the test for butterfat. From the monthly weights taken by the member and the butterfat test conducted by the Supervisor, the milk and fat production for each cow is then calculated. It is planned to have these records processed by the electronic data | processing: laboratory . at the Department of Animal Science, Ontario Agricultural - College, Guelph, with a complete pro- duction report being sent back to the member each month, A cost of production programme | is also available on an optional basis- at no extra cost. Both grade. and purebred herds are eligible to participate in this new testing programme. Members would be required to supply a satisfactory set' of scales for the weighing of milk and to pay a fee of $1.00 pe COW per year. - The introduction of the Own- er-Sampler testing programme is an attempt to expand the production testing of Ontario's dairy herds.
