Armstrong, beloved husband of Will Insure | Wheat Crops Hon. Wm. A. Stewart, Min- ister of Agriculture and Food, has recently announced that the Crop Insurance Commis- siorr, established at the last session of the Legislature, is now prepared to insure winter wheat crops in the Province. The coverage, at the present time, applies- to winter wheat only, but will be extended to other crops in the fututre. These insurable crops will in- clude spring grain, corn, for- age crops, ete. Coverage includes the haz- ards of drought, excessive rain- fall, excess moisture, flood, frost, hail, wind, winter-kill, plant disease and- insect infes- tation. . Under the new Crop Insuran- ce Plan, the amount of cover- age offered is optional. The farmer may insure for 60, 70 or of his mormal expected yield, coverage, a wheat producer must indicate his normal ex- pected yield in bushels per acre based on production records covering the preceding ten years, and assuming normal conditions. The calculation for claims for the 1967 winter wheat crop will be based on a value of $1.50 per bushel. If any part of the insured acreage is damaged by winter-kill, and is seeded to a- substitute crop, a claim based on 30% of the coverage for the damaged area. may be approved. The insurance contract of- fered by the Crop_ Insurance Commission of Ontario has been developed after extensive research, and it has been espe- cially designed with Ontario conditions in mind. It is point- ed out that it might be termed a guaranteed production plan, as it virtually guarantees a farmer's yield from most haz- ards. The premium rate schedule in this area for winter wheat for each $100.00 of insurance cov- erage is as follows: at 60% it is $4.40, at 709%--$5.90, and at 80%--$7.90 The premium rate varies according to the area of the Province in which the far- mer lives. = The final date for applica- tions for coverage on winter wheat has been set at December 16th. In future years, the fin- al date will be September 15th. Winter wheat growers are being informed by mail of the location of insurance agents who can provide applications for coverage and complete de- tails of the programme. Far- mers, who did not sell wheat or grow wheat last year, will not be on this mailing list. They may secure information from the Ontario Agriculture and Food Office, Uxbridge. Mrs. W.
