Edward (Ontario Hydro Photo) Young Indian Men Now Area Foresters Full-blooded Indians will be making an important contribu- tion in highly skilled forestry work associated with maintain- ing uninterrupted service to Ontario Hydro rural customers. Four Indian young men from Northern Ontario reservations recently were selected by Ont- ario Hydro and put through an intensive six - week training course in forestry in co-opera- tion with a dynamic progarm by three Ontario government departments to aid the provin- ce's Indians by providing op- portunities to learn new skills and trades. Two of the Indians have just been posted to Hydro's Central Region and the other two to Northeastern Region. The two selected for the Cen- tral Region are brothers. One has-been sent to Bowmanville Area and the other to Uxbridge Area. The intensive forestry training course that they took was given in Hespler district district, and Peter Jenkins, Hydro's for- estry training co-ordinator, said the brothers George Andrews, 21, and Edward Andews, 26, were particularly adept at learn- ing. The two are fine looking young men and both are top athletes. George is-a lacrosse player while Edward is a hoe- key defenceman. The weather was quite enjoy- able for the thirty-five attend- ing. After a swim for some, the sports committee started the races and guessing contest, Prizes were given to Drew Me- Culloch, the oldest man; Irene Prentice, oldest lady. The fur- thest away was Viola Bardocze, The youngest baby Ricky Mar. tin. The guessing contest was won by Irene Prentice Discus- sion for next year was to have 'an evening together instead of the picnic. A very enjoyable supper was had by all. Edward had gone to high-school in Little Current. "They are two fine, responsi. ble young men. I can recom- mend them most highly, They have taken to forestry work quite naturally and efficiently," Mr. Jenkins said. The men were among 34 selected by the Ontario Depart- 'ment of Welfare"frfom reserva- tions where there is little em- ployment opportunity. Cost of the training program was borne by, the Federal government and the Ontario Department of Ag- riculture and was co-ordinated by the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests, The mobile camp and forestry instructors were supplied by Ontario Hydro. Ontario Government officials maintain that the 34 Indians who underwent forestry training should be able to put their ex- palities and for local hydro uti- lities in the removal of thou- sands of trees in the province blighted by Dutch elm disease, and to do effective forestry work as a vocation, |QUALITY PRINTING | Save Time and Windy. a LETTERPRESS and OFFSET PRINTING | The PORT A LET US DO IT WHEN. Champions dropped the first game on Mon. night to Oshawa Storie Park, 26 to 11, Ron Evans and Jim Ashbridge shared the pitching for Port as their team-mates committed too many errors behind them. Ron Evans and Rod MacLellan each hit home runs for Port. Wilson pitched the entire game for Oshawa and although he got in trouble several times his mates helped him out with fine defensive plays. The next game of this best of three series is on Wed. night. The legion boys will have to be sharp to force a third game which would be on Saturday. BANTAM TOURNAMENT The Bantam tournament which was held in Port Perry on July 23 was a fine success with the Lions Club boys coming out on top to capture the Port Perry Star Trophy. An unfortunate accident happened during the game when Bob Bruton after playing fine ball all day both with the bat and glove suffered a broken leg just above the ankle while slidding into home in the final game. All the local ball players are glad to see young Bob back at the ball park even though he will be lost to the team for the balance of the year. 0.A.S.A.
