PORT PERRY STAR, Thurs, Oct. 28th, 1965-5 NDP CANDIDATE STRESSES THE NEED FOR MEDICARE "The compulsory features of | ideals Canadians cherish. the Medicare recommendations of the Hall Commission are ne- cessary, and in no way objec- tionable or undemocratic, ac- cording to the Royal Commis- sion on Health Services" New Democratic Party Candidate Oliver Hodges told the Local 222 GM Unit membership meet- ing Thursday night. Mr. Hodges said that the New Democratic Party alone had en- dorsed the Royal Commission on Health Services recommenda- tion without qualification. "Me- dicare as recommended by these experts must be implemented. I shall work unceasingly to see that we Canadians enjoy the full benefits of Medicare. It is the priority item", Pointing out that the union had bargained for and won full medical and hospital protection paid by the company, he said that when Medicare came in, these negotiated benefits would be converted to cash or other additional benefits. Mr. Hodges stressed the in- sistence of the Royal Commis- sion that the compulsory fea- tures of Medicare were neces- sary to achieve the democratic He pointed out that whereas we are compelled to pay taxes for education and our children are compelled to attend schools, in the case of Medicare, while there is compulsion to pay taxes, there is no compulsion on anyone to accept or obtain ser- vices.
