The home of Mr, and Mrs. Glenn Stewart was the scene of a happy gathering on Sunday, July 4, to mark the 40th Wed- ding Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. R. U. Sanders, Richmond Hill, parents of Mrs. Stewart. About thi guests were pre- sent including the couple's other three daughters, their families and one son, Another picnic and re-union of about 60 members of the Hurst family took place on Sun- day, July 11 at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Bruce Hurst, Hampton, The honoured guest was Mrs. Beatrice Hurst, Oshawa, who was celebrating her 83rd birth- day. This lady is the mother pf Mr. Norm Hurst and Mrs. Al. Bertrand so those two fa- milies were well represented. Miss Lorna Dure, Toronto, spent several days with Mr. & Mrs. J. S. MacFarlane and as- sisted the Sonya ladies at their anniversary supper on July 1. Then on Sat., July 8, she and Mrs. MacFarlane attended the unveiling of a historical plaque in honour of the writer of the "Anne" books -- L. M. Mont- gomery. This ceremony was at Leaskdale where the author lived years ago as the wife of a Presbyterian Minister, Rev E. MacDonald, Other recent visitors with the MacFarlanes were Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Morrison of Cress- well and their children Carol Amn, Ronald and Glenn. Mrs. Alvin Blade, her three children and her sister-in-law of Middle Musquoboit, Nova Scotia have been in Ontario for ten days. They visited with an old friend Mrs. Donald Crosier who entertained for them on Thursday. She is quite ill and her son Mr. Donald Willis of Salt Lake City, Utah is here visit- ing her, There were two ball games involving our local boys this week. On Tuesday the Sonya Braves defeated Valentia 14-7 but on Sunday were defeated in a game with Sunderland. Score 18-14. This was quite a game as Sonya team was far behind until the last innings when they made the circuit 11 times. Two players from the Victoria Independent League are having a chance to show their ability. Ted Hallett of Sonya and Wally McMillan of Little Britain have been chosen to play with Osh- awa Jr. team. They helped win 2 games in Hamilton on Satur- day and next Saturday will play in a tournament at Maple Leaf Stadium. If the team wins there they will proceed to flat- ten teams from U.S.A. Mr. Bill Harper journeyed to Chicago last week to visit his aunt and cousins, With Mr. and Mrs. Boe now are two young ladies from Port Perry -- Miss Jill Dowson and Miss Debbie Short. Mr. Karl Herder is holiday- ing at the Clements - Belair home. Mr. Robt. Nodwell and daugh- ter Rosemary took to the air on Monday on D paris Scotland. We are slightly jealous but hope they have a fine trip. They expect to be away 3 weeks. Miss Maureen Tobin attended another shower on Friday even- ing. This one was for Bonnie Harrison at the home of Mary Lou Crawford, Port Perry. On Saturday afternoon, Rev. E. McNeil officiated at the marriage of Miss Shirley Spen- cer to Mr. Roy Davey. Within a few days, he received word of the drowning accident at Minaki, a resort area North of Kenora. His brother, Dr. Elwood Martyn of Winnipeg, and two compan- ions were missing. Lorne and his brother Glenn of Whitby, went to assist in the search. Later, on July 8th, Lorne at- tended the funeral of his bro- ther Elwood, in Winnipeg, also Elroy of Montreal, the twin brother of the deceased. Many relatives and friends in this area, where Elwood, a graduate of P.P.H.S, had spent his youth, are deeply grieved over this sad event. last week.
