Orly a short time ago we thrill- ed to the report that a man had left his craft flying at incred- ible speed and had walked in space". Just days ago a tor- nado of most violent propor- tions ripped through states to our south causing untold loss of life and property. The irony of such a situation --the mystery, so far as we are cencerned--attending the flight and walk in space, and the equally great mystery of the tornado in Indiana, make us realize that man is far from omniscient yet. It does appear as if we have learned to master all the forces of nature--but we can't master the tornado! Here in this space, we think of advance being made in other areas. Perhaps the greatest advances are being made in outer space explorationgand in Medicine. The physicist in the first instance and the research scientist in Medicine are ex- piorers in the truest sense. Each is searching in a world partially, if not wholly known t> him, and most certainly the medical researcher, particularly in the field of Cancer research, is exploring a world as mys- terious, exciting and challeng- ing as that of outer space. The world these men are in- vestigating in cancer research is the world of the living cell which is that of life itself. The problems they face are every bit as numerous and as complex | as those faced by the explorers lin outer space, and there seems ' to be no end to all their labours. A very great deal is done by Volun- teers, everyday folk like our- selves who in addition to the busy activities of our private lives, find time & have the will to do something more to help some of our fellows who may be stricken with Cancer in one of its many forms, 5 "Community involvenient", is a phrase often used in our times. What does it- mean? It means all of society--us--pit- ching in to do a job that we can do well because the service we thus give is of use to some one else. It's the Cancer Society and many other such volunteer groups--but in this particular Month mainly the Cancer So- ciety, holding teas, selling Daf- fodils, staging Garden Parties ard doing any number of other things to raise money to do their part- of the work in the fight against Cancer. The money they raise goes for Education; to help remind us all of the signs to watch for; for Dressings, to be used by pa- tients who have had surgery and may need them; for Trans- portation, to carry patients to the Clinics for further treat- ment and for a host of other services, not the least of which is Research. _ Community Involvment" in- cludes YOU.
