~ No Increase In 1965 Mill Rate P2RT PERRY Volume 100 5 Number 28 Appoint Morley Bain Ont. County Sheriff Morley Bain, deputy-sheriff under the late Col. Arthur Welsh has been appointed she- riff of Ontario County. The appointment was announ- ced last week by Ontario Health Minister Matthew Dymond, The new sheriff has been an active figure in the political life of Ontario County and has served as councillor, deputy- reeve, reeve of Scott Township and also held the position of Warden of Ontario County in 1957. Mr. Bain was appointed de- puty-sheriff in 1958, and should be well qualified for his new position as sheriff. I look for the best administration of jus. tice in the county, Mr. Bain says, "and hope to keep up the high standards set by my pre decessor." Col. Welsh held the positions of both sheriff and registrar of court. The public is invited to attend. Board Appoints New Committee The financixl statement of Port Perry Community Mem-. orial Arena Board showed a comfortable surplus of $7,646.15 at the end of 1964. This and other important' items of business was brought np at a board meeting held on March 23rd. Councillor Bruce Beare, a member of the Board informed the members, it is possible that Centennial grants may be ob- tained by the Federal and Pro- vincial Governments for exten- sive renovations to the arena such as new washrooms, new front, refreshment booth, and heated community ropm. If such grants should be ap- proved, the council will also contribute their share to the project, he said. A committee of three mem- bers, Bud Heard, Grant Me- Dermott and Ross Sweetman was appointed to have plans made, and approximate cost estimated and to be presented al the next general meeting on April 18th, Will Attend Convention On. Friday and Saturday, April 2 and 3rd the Ontario Amateur Softball Convention will be held at Peterboro. This year as in the past a delegation will be on hand to represent the Port Perry and District Minor Softball Aassoc, This year the delegation will include Pres. Don Cochrane, See'y Vin Walker, Diréctor Don Gray and Len Clark, It is ex- pected several of our local um- pires will be on hand for the Umpires school on Sunday morning. Ammendments which the del- agates will support include; Raising the Squirt age to 11 years from the present 10 yrs.; splitting the minor series into an A Series over 15,000 Papu- lation, B Series under 15,000 Population and the changing of the distance between bases in bantam series to the b5 ft. same as Midget but leaving the ball at 11 inch. Thes delegates will make their report at the next meeting of the minor on Sunday, April 11, 8 p.m. at the Arena. Congratulations Congratulations to Mrs. Thomas J. Blight who recently celebrated her 85th Birthday. Her many friends will be pleas- ed to know that she is getting along fairly well after her ac- cident in the Fall. Although this meeting had been well advertised and the general public invited to attend, there was only one gentleman there whe had no direct connection with the Board or the hospital itself. Chairman Harry Phoenix opened the meeting and deplor- ed the lack of interest on the part of the public. The Board Members were all in attendance anc he complimented these six gertlemen on their interest and hard work in connection with the hospital. The minutes of the last An- nual Meeting held March 24th, 1964 were read and approved. The Secretary then read the list of hospital representatives from the Townships of Reach, Scugog, Cartwright, the Village of Port Perry and Ontario County. Dr. G. M.
