Volume 100 THURSDAY, JANUARY 14th, 1965 Number 17 ~ Break-in And Theft At Local Curling Rink A break-in and theft at the Curling Rink between-5:30 and 7.30 p.m. on January 11th is under investigation by the Port Perry Police. The burglars made their way through an east window of the building by pulling away the screen and breaking the window open. Inside the building they rip- ped the pay telephone box off the wall containing an unknown amount of money. From here they entered the lounge, stole the cash register containing about $25.00 to $30.00 in change. Neither the cash register or the telephone cash box have yet been recovered. * * * During the night of January 8rd, an attempted break-in was made at the rear of the Mersco Store in Port Perry. Births Deaths ...cvvvmrircnssrensnses Discharges Remaining REACH TOWNSHIP Court Of Revision Hears Appeals For the past 3 days, Reach Township has/been holding a Court of Revision at the Muni- cipal Hall, Manchester, to hear appeals against 1965 property assessments, For the first time, members of Council do not make up the panel; instead, a three-man Bd. has been selected, comprised of Mr. Howard MacMillan, Green- bank; Mr. George Davidson, Blackwater and Mr. Bruce Snel- grove, Prince Albert. These three men are serving as a Board to hear various com- plaints and appeals from all corners of the Township against the recently introduced system of having lands and buildings assessed under the County As- sessor' Manual. Some 150 filed with Reach Township Clerk-Treasurer, Mr. A. R. Johns, necessitating a 3-day hearing. Alec Rice was called up- Port Perry Council Inaugurated Monday on to conduct the Devotional Exercises and first gave a short address, expressing the thought that those who had taken the Oath of Office must have the interest of the community at heart. Then, turning to the Old Testament of the Bible, he used for his Scripture reading -the 12th Chapter of Ecclesiastes and then concluded the Devo- tional Exercises with prayer. The quartette con- sisted of Bruce McMillan and Ron King of Blackwater; Ken Skerratt, Port Perry, #4, and Ralph Honey, Seagrave #2. David Hawthorne, 'Claremont, #2, represented the County in the Public Speaking Competi- tion. The winner of the public speaking competition was James Moore of Elgin County. The mixed quartette winners came from Huron County, while Perth County had the ladies' trio winners, Ship Holsteins By Jet To Italy Three purebred Holsteins from farmers in this area were a- mong 55 shipped by jet plane to Italy on January 4th.
