Hill At service in the United Church a new (Communion table, presented by Glenn Larmer on behalf of the Town and Country and accepted by Stanford Van Camp on behalf of the Session was dedicated by Rev. P. Rom- eril. The choir sang the An- them "In This Quiet Moment". "Rev. Romeril chose as the theme for his sermon--*I Have Prom- ised". Holy Communion was administered. In St. John's Church Canon Ashmore dealt with the going out of the old and coming of the New Year, etc. The officers of the W.A., were installed and Holy Communion administered. There will be a service in this church on Epiphany Day, Wed- nesday, January 6 at 10 a.m. Monday morning, Jan. 4th-- Teachers and Pupils back to school for another term, at least all who are able. There are several around who have severe colds or flu, which we hope will soon be cleared up with this lovely brisk bright winter weather. A by-law was passed in Port Perry council to appoint the County Assessor to take over assessment duties in the village. APRIL Early morning fire destroyed i three bams on a farm belong- {ing to George Davidson R.R. 2, Blackater. Also lost in the fire were 450 . pigs and 14 cows. Damage was estimated at $50,- 000. The mill rate in Port Perry was struck at a special council meeting and in contrast to most municipalities Port Perry resi- dents received the good news of lower tax rates for 1964. Two (Port Perry men were in- jured in cbllision when a car driven by Clive Boyd met head- on with a car driven by John Needham on the Oshawa Road. JUNE Members and guests attended the official opening of the mew Oddellows Hall of Warriner Lodge No. 75 and Maybelle Re-! bekah Lodge, No. 348. The ex- cellent building. is located just south of Port Perry and is the result of much planning and hard work on part of the mem- bers. Branch of thé Canadian Legion gathered at the Hall to see the burning of a $10,500 mortgage now completely paid off. Ladies Auxiliary of the Leg- ion presented a cheque for $1,000. as their annual contribu- tion to the upkeep of the Legion Hall. JULY 1200 members from 50 bran- ches attended the annual Legion Drumhead Service held in Port Perry. on "A local policeman was forced to fire shots at a truck stolen from Reesor Fuel and Lumber Co. when the driver refused to stop, One shot went through the rear cab window and lodged in the driver's shoulder. It 1 happened after the theft of two trucks from Reesor's Fuel and Lumber Co. and a foiled at- tempt to break into the Brew- er"s Warehouse in Port Perry. Nine persons were taken to hospitals after three different car crashes. Garth A. Paton, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Love, of Port Perry was awarded a $2,000 Fitness and Amateur Sport Scholarship from the Do- minion Government, for the purpose of graduate study in the field of physical education. Rev. A. Rice, B.A., who came here from Regent Park United Church, Toronto, took over his new charge of Port Perry United Church. AUGUST Army Worms caused consid- erable damage to oat and comn crops in the Port Perfy area. A helicopter had to be brought in to spray the fields and over 1000 acres was sprayed at a cost of $4.00 per acre. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Cox win the Clarence Hobbs Trophy in Oshawa in competition with 54 Lawn Bowling pairs. - A Holstein from the farm of Gordon Ward was sold for $2,000 at an auction sale con- ducted by Ted Jackson.
