BLACKSTOCK NEWS By 0. Hill The general meeting of the U.C.W. was held in the C. E. room Tuesday, Nov. 3rd. [Pre- sident opened with a brief prayer and a poem on Thank- fulness. The worship was un- der the direction of the Can- dace unit. Mrs. Gordon Strong gave the call to worship and prayer. Hymn 673 was sung. Mrs. Ralph Larmer read the scripture passages. Prayers of thanksgiving were offered. Mrs. Strong gave a fine Thanksgiv- ing reading. Mrs. P. Romeril explained some of "God and His Purpose" and after groups had discussed several questions, she went on with some enlightenment. A song "Cloud Ships" was prac- tised. Two minute book reports on Brazil and Trinidad were given by Jessie Gunter, Thelma Wright, Gladys Thompson and Ruby Van Camp. Mrs. Stan- ford Van Camp gave a report of the Regional Rally at Clare- mont. Business was dealt with, meet- ing closed with prayer by Mrs. Romeril, after which the Can- dace unit held bake sale and Dorcas unit served lunch. At- tendance 30 ladies and 4 child- ren, Excellent congregations en- joyed the services in the United Church on Sunday. Rev. Doug- las Pilkey, B.A. of Dorval, Quebec and who is field Sec'y of Missionary and Maintenance Department for Montreal, Ot- tawa and Bay of Quinte con- ferences delivered two very forecful, thought-provoking and interesting sermons. In the morning he spoke on "What is the Church?" and his subject in the evening was "Are you Saved". In the morning the choir rendered the Anthem "More Love to Thee, O- Christ" and Mrs. Harold Kyte in her usual sweet voice sang the solo "Today I Walked where Jesus Walked". In the evening ser- vice the choir chose as their Anthem "0, what a Wonderful Saviour" with Mrs. Lorne Thompson taking the solo part. Beautiful mums in memory of their loved ones, were placed in the church by Mr. and Mis. Gib Marlow and Mr. and Mrs. Neil Malcolm, Sympathy dis extended Mrs. Wm. Fee and family on the death of Mr. Fee last Tuesday. In St. John's Church Sunday morning an Armistice Day ser- vice was held. Mr. George Wolfe presented the memorial wreath to Canon Ashmore who placed it in front of the altar. Other flowers in church were placed by the family in memory of Mr. William Fee. Past Master's night of Black- stock L.O.L. No. 138 was held Mon., Nov. 2nd. W.M. David McLean presided for the open- ing of Lodge and placed Past Masters in the official chairs. Visitors from Devitt's No. 48 and Tyrone No. 764 and the P.G. Master of B.M. Rev. Can- on Ashmore attended. Routine business was conducted by P.M. Stanford Van Camp with dis- patch and lodge closed to as- semble with the Blackstock L.0.B.A. for a bountiful lunch which they provided. The members of the L.0.B.A. sat in with L.O.L, and listened to a timely talk by R. W. Can- on Ashmore on "The Events of our Day". Other speakers were P.M. of Ont. EEW.B. C, P. Devitt; P. Counte; M. L. Tay- lor; H. Wheeler of Oshawa; P.M. E. Dorrell welcomed and thanked the ladies, with the hope more of these get-togeth- ers will be held in the future. L.O.L. #183 election of officers is to be held Dec. 7th. A good attendance expected. Approximately 60 friends, re- latives and neighbours gathered in the Community Hall Satur- day evening in honour of Miss Edna Larmer, who sold her farm recently and moved into one of the Martyn apartments in- the village this last week. (Welcome to Blackstock). A pleasant time of visiting and playing cards was followed by a short programme for which Mr. John Archer was M.C. Mrs, Leslie Argue read an in- teresting address in verse and Mrs. - Kenneth Gilbanks made the presentation of a tri-light floor lamp and a purse of money. Miss Larmer made a fitting reply. Lunch was served. Friends were present from Toronto, Oshawa, Bowmanville, Peterboro & surrounding area. Glad to report Mr. Albert Wright came home from hospi- tal Sunday. We hope he will continue to improve steadily. Mr. and Mrs. Rupert Byers, Bowmanville were Wednesday supper guests of Mr, and Mrs. Leith Byers. Mrs. Leonard Bradley was supper guest of Mr. and Mrs. Mervyn Graham and all three visited Mr. and Mrs. Osmond Wright in the evening. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Taylor and girls were Sunday supper guests of Mr. and Mrs, Ken- neth Noble, Uxbridge.
