By Michael Starr, M.P. Aug. 25/64 As | write this column the flag debate is still going full force and is presently in its fourteenth day. The Minister of Trade and Commerce participated in this debate. He had very little to offer as a suggestion to end the impasse on the flag issue. His position was adamant in support of the proposed Pear- son flag. A Liberal Member, Mr. Ralph Cowan, representing the Rid- ing of York-Humber, also par- ticipated in the flag debate. He pointed out that he has been an active Liberal since 1923. In nis opinion a national flag is the visible evidence of a coun- try's soul and the symbol of its pride, Without it a nation is dead. He stated that Can- ada has a flag, a distinctive flag, the Red Ensign. He said 10 -- PORT PERRY STAR, THURSDAY, SEPT. 3rd, 1964 "Report From Parliament that he was speaking in the de- bate because he did not believe that the great bulk of Liberal support across Canada was committed to the doctrine of a new flag which was different from the Red Ensign. Posing as a good Liberal, he claimed that neither he nor the Liberal caucus had any details of the proposed new flag until it appeared on the Order Paper for the consideration of Parlia- ment. He criticized the offer of the Prime Minister of a free vote in the House of Commons. The Members of other par- ties in the House have not par- ticipated in the flag debate with the exception of only ona or two. Many questions are still ask- ed on the Orders of the Day on matters considered to be of urgent importance. Some of the questions have to do with matters such as to when the Government is bringing in le- gislation to increase veterans' allowances, pension plan, Lab- our Code, and many other much needed pieces of legislation, To all of these questions the members of the Cabinet answer that action will be taken soon or after the flag debate.
