Such kills, in the District, have remained fairly constant, between 91 and 98, in the past 4 years, according to Wildlife Management Officer J. S. Dor- land at Maple. The locations of mortality, however, have chang- ed to some extent as newer and faster highways are opened to the travelling public. The number of vehicle kills in southern townships, border- ing industrial areas, Lake Ont- ario and Metro Toronto, ac- counted for nearly one-third of the 1963 Total. This indicates a southerly movement and build up of deer population in areas where the animals. can cause serious inconvenience in future. Approximately 60% of the total number of such accidents takes place in rutting season, during the months of October, Novem- ber and December, when there is considerable movement of the male deer. The months of July, August and September account for only 6.5% of the total and the period January to June ac- counts for some 34.5%. Mr. Dorland stated that re- ported deer kills, during the first 6 months of 1964, show al- ready some 47% of last year's figure of 93, has been reached, representing an increase of 13% during this period as compared with last year. If this accident rate, on Dist- rict highways, continues to climb throughout the balance of the year, without a considerable reduction of the herd, through Manchester News Miss Della Hooper and bro- ther, Master Jeffrey Hooper of » Don Mills have been holidaying with Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Most occupants of vehicles in collision with the animals, in past years, have been fortunate in escaping with only minor injuries. The pos- sibility, however, of a fatal in- jury is always present, especial- ly in areas where deer criss- oross traffic routes in numbers.
