In the Supplementary Estim- ates there appeared an item for one dollar, to replenish the Un- employment Insurance Fund, The Estimates were tabled on March 6th and lay dormant for 25 days. This item in fact provided for a loan of 56 million dollars to the Fund. The reason it was listed was because the Govern- ment knew the Fund would be bankrupt by the end of March. The Government did not dis- close this fact to Parliament and hoped the Estimates would be passed without questions asked. When the deadline approached the Fund was four and a half million dollars in deficit. It was only then that the situ- ation was revealed and Parlia- ment became aware of the state of the Fund. The Government was chastised for their tardiness and secretive attitude, and the money was approved in time. However, Senator O'Leary postponed final approval until Monday, April 6th, when the Appropriation Bill was given Royal Assent. This experience will not be repeated again. A lesson has been learned, that you cannot leave a matter as important as this to the last minute and ex- pect immediate action without proper consideration, A great deal .of discontent has been voiced over the ar- rangement made by the Trus- tees who have been appointed over the Maritime Unions on the Great Lakes. It is quite evident that in order to satisfy the Internation- al Executive of the Seafarers' International Union ,and pre- serve peace on the Great Lakes, the terms were allowed to be dictated, in the main, by the Executive of this Union. Canadian union heads who are affected have voiced their ob- BULK SPREADING This concentrated SPREADER RENTAL Plan To Use C.LL. The Vice- President will now assume this office in accordance with the S.I.U, constitution. On investigation of prices an agricultural products, a com- parison has been made of the level of these prices for Decem- ber, 1962 and December, 1963. Prices generally have declin- ed. Cattle prices, based on live weight, dropped by almost 8¢ a lb. Calf prices dropped by 21%¢ a lb. Hogs (dressed) drop- ped 38%¢ a lb. Poultry, eggs and milk remained relatively stable without much variation. A further drop in prices was ex- perienced in the month of Janu- ary, which was greater than in December, This situation should be recti- fied by the Government because it means that the income of the farmer and producer is being diminshed, instead of increasing in keeping wth the income of other segments of our popula- 'tion. : Manchester News Sandford visited Mr. and Mrs. C.
