2 -- PORT PERRY STAR, THURSDAY, MARCH 5th, 1964 BLACKSTOCK NEWS On Feb. 25, 1964, when the General U.C.W, met in the Christian Education room, the President Mrs. N. Malcolm op- ened the meeting with a poem-- "A Thought on Gratitude". Mrs. Marwood McKee and Mrs. Gordon_.Strong gave an impressive worship period on "A Training for Witness". A hymn was sung. Mrs. Ernest Larmer dedicated the offering. Mrs. Romeril, Candace unit leader, presided for the pro- gramme. The theme of which was--The World of Indian Wo- men and was ably dealt with by Mrs. Gordon Paisley and Mrs. Ralph Larmer, followed by the tape recording '"The Indian Women", Before commencing the busi- ness, the president asked for the motto to be repeated by all. Roll was called. Secretary & Treas- urer's reports received. Each unit leader reported on their February meeting. Mrs. Bruce Mountjoy gave a two-minute 'resume of the Presytery An- nual in Whitby. Mrs. Jean Me- Laughlin, Mrs. Lloyd Wright and Mrs. Harold Kyte also brought some worthwhile items. After the meeting closed with prayer by the President, the Anna unit had a fine bake sale. This was followed by a delici- ous lunch served by the Esther unit. 33 members attended. The Messengers and Explor- ers met together in the Sunday School room Tuesday and saw a film of Chinno--An Indian Boy. They also enjoyed several re- cords. Then viewed Indian clothes and toys which Doreen Van Camp had sent home. The Esther unit of the U.C.W. treat- ed them to a delicious lunch. The Annual Meeting of the Cartwright Conservative Asso- ciation was held Friday night in the Community Hall with a good attendance. 'Mr. John Hamilton, president presided for the business then asked Mr. Bob Sisson Bethany, president of the County Asso- ciation to preside for the elec- 'tion 'of officers which resulted as 'follows: -- President--John Hamilton; Vice president--Bill Ferguson; Secretary-Treasurer --Ernest Swain; Chairman of. the poling divisions:--Purple Hill -- Henry Wotten, Vice-- .Courtney Graham; Blackstock-- 'Roy Ferguson, Viee -- Percy VanCamp; Devitt's -- John Ar- cher, Vice -- Russel Larnier; Caesarea--Stanford Van Camp, Vice--Ralph Sadler; Nestleton --Lorne McKee, Vice--Maurice Nesbitt. Mr. John Hamilton returned to 'thie chair and called on Mr. Alex Carruthers, M.P.P. who expressed his appreciation for 'the 'support he received from 'Cartwright in the last election, and informally introduced Hon. Dr. M. B. Dymond, who has been Minister of Health for 5 an®®ne half years. The Doctor gave a most interesting and in- formative address on his work which includes Cancer; Alcohol- ism; Public Health; Heart Di- sease and Ontario's number one Health Problem, which his Men- tal disorder. The appreciation of the ga- thering was expressed to Hon. Dr. Dymond for his enlighten- ing address, by Mr. Garnet Ri- ckard, P.C. candidate for Dur- 'ham in the last Federal elec- tion, who also told some inter- esting and humorous items. Following the adjournment of the meeting the ladies served a delicious lunch and a social hour was enjoyed. Nine members and three vis- itors of the Anglican W.A. ga- thered in the Parish Hall on Thursday, Feb. 27th at 9 a.m. and commenced quilting on two qiults. Each lady brought her own sandwiches and desert and coffee was served by the host- esses, Mrs. Frank Staniland and Mrs. John Hamilton. After lunch a short meeting was held. The opening Devo- tional was given by Mrs. Velva Bailey which included, Bible reading, Meditation and prayer and a reading--*"A Message of the Trellis". Secretary and Treasurer reports were given. Further plans for the Dessert Tea April 15th at 1.15 p.m. were | made. Miss Carol Lane from Shell Oil Co. is. to be guest speaker. Members received tickets to sell for luncheon. The. Dorcas Secretary report- ed some donations in for the bale for Indian School... Other articles were promised and a cash donation was received to buy other necessary items for this bale, which must be shipped by the end of March. The ladies continued quilting. through the afternoon. The next meeting to be held March 19th at 8 p.m. in the Parish Hall. : A. bus load of High School students _ enjoyed a skating party at Millbrook Friday night. The February meeting of the 'Town and Country Club was held in the Christian Education Centre Wednesday evening with an attendance of 652. Mr. Anson Taylor, Scarboro, came down Wednesday morning Feb. 24th and showed pictures taken on his trip through Rus- sia in December. Also gave a very informative talk to all the High School students and Grade 8 of Public School, who as- sembled in the Community Hall. Myr. Taylor has consented to show these pictures under the sponsorship of the Women's In- stitute, April 24th. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Green on the arrival of their chosen son. ! SAMUEL MULHOLLAND The death of Samuel Mulhol- land occurred. on Wednesday evening, February 26th, very suddenly at-his home, east of Greenbank, "Ontario. Sam Mulholland was born at White Abbey, Northern Ireland on February 9th, 1888, the son of William Mulholland and Mar- garet Boyd, He came to Can- ada as a young boy and resided in Toronto. In 1920 he married Lavinia Mann and worked for the former Ideal Bread Comp- any for twenty-four years as Manager of the West End Branch. In 1947 Sam retired and moved to Greenbank where he and his wife resided until his death. . A veteran of World War I & II, Sam Mulholland was a Life Member of Queen City (Tor- onto Lodge, Masonic and also a member of Branch 419, Royal Canadian Legion, Port Perry, Ontario, He is survived by his wife, two sons (William of Camp Borden) and Walter Edwin two daughters, Flora (Toronto) and Marie (Port Perry). Seven grand. children also survive. An only child, Sam Mulholland has no surviving relatives either in Canada or in Ireland. The remains rested at the McDermott - Panabaker Funeral Home, Port Perry for memorial service in the chapel on Satur- day, February 29th at.2 p.m. Rev. C. C. Gilbert, Padre of Fidelity "Lodge and also Padre "| of Branch 419, Royal Canadian Legion conducted the service. Interment Pine Grove Cemetery Prince Albert.
