6--PORT (PERRY STAR, THURS. JAN, 30th, 1964 Blackstock Guides And Brownies Enjoy Mother & Daughter Banquet By Olga Hill Saturday, Jan. 18 was a gala night for the Guides and Brow- nies of Blackstock. It was their annual "Mother & Daugh- ter" Banquet, and a night that they had been waiting for. For weeks they had heard that this year's banquet was going to be something extra special, "Hor- ace" was coming, as the guest speaker. To the younger girls who have as yet not been to Doe Lake, "Horace" is a legend, and to those girls who have had the pleasure of camping at Doe Lake under "Horace" she IS Doe Lake. Mrs. Harold Kyte introduced Mrs. Walter Wright who proposed the toast to the Guide Move- ment and mentioned the values of good leadership and how for- tunate we are here in Black- stock to have such excellent leaders. Brown Owl Mrs. Roy Turner replied, and expressed the satisfaction she found in being part of Guide Movement. Nancy Dorrell proposed the toast to the Mothers, and thank- ed them far their interest, and the help that they give to their daughters, when there are problems and disappointments, Mrs. Neil Werry replied, and thanked Nancy for the nice things she had said. Mrs. Vernon Hudson then gave a report on the Parents Organization's year's work. Tawny Owl Mrs. Ernest Swain gave the Brownie report from Oct. 1962 until the present time. They have had a skating party, arranged by two Guides (who earned their Hostess badge for this), the Brownies sold candy at the Hydro Cooking School and made $18.16, to buy a new mirror for their Fairy Ring. They also had a Pack Holiday at Mr. and Mrs. Grant Thomp- son's cottage at View Lake. 9 Brownies had earned their Gol- den Hand and Wings, one had earned her Golden Ladder, and 106 badges had been awarded. 16 Tweenies had been: enrolled this year, and the Pack now had 18 Brownies, two Guides who are working toward their Gold Cord are helping with the Brownies, Linda Kyte, and Joan Suggitt. The Guide report was given by Lieutenant Mrs. James Mar- low. The Company have earn- ed 118 badges, there have been 21 Tenderfoot Guides, 5 All Round Cords have been award- ed, 5 1st class, 14 2nd class badges, 5 Little House, and 4 Wood Craft badges. Commissioner Mrs. | Kyte spoke very briefly and thanked the Guiders for their co-operation and for making her job a pleasure. - she then introduced the members of the Local Assoc., Mrs. Ivan Mount- joy, Treas. Mrs. Roy McLaugh- lin, Badge Sec., Mrs. S. Rahm, Camp.--Convener, Mrs. Merlin Suggitt, Training, Mrs. Fred Hamilton, Public Relations, Mrs. John Ballingall. The next part of the pro- gramme was turned over to Guides Janice Byers and Joan | this Com- | ery smart' Harold | Suggitt, who led us in some rousing songs, and to hep ward off that too full feeing, a couple of exercise songs, which we hope took off those extra | pounds that we had just ac- quired. Another event of pleasant | the evening was performed by Mrs. Fred Hamilton, assisted by Guide Joan Horton and Brownie Elaine Metcalf, this was a pre- | sentation to one of Guiding's "Friends" in the person of Mrs. Gilbert Marlow, She has just recently left our community, to make her home in Brooklin, and we shall miss Doris. her help in testing the Guides and Brownies and the instruction she gave on gardening, and all the nice little 'quiet' things she did for the girls. Although Doris was never a Guide her- self, she most certainly lived up to the 4th Guide Law, "A Guide is a friend to all and a sister to every other Guide". Then the moment that we had been waiting for, Linda Kyte introduced our Honoured Guest, Miss Edith Milne, better known to those veterans of Doe Lake as "Horace". Miss Milne is Camp Cammandant at Doe Lake | and we have wanted to have her | as our guest several times but her duties at "Doe" have always conflicted with our Mother and Daughter night so this year wa arranged a date to suit her. Miss Milne's theme was Good Guiding, Be Prepared, and A Good Turn. She congratulated Blackstock Wistrict for the ef- ficient way both Brownie Pack and Guide Company were con- ducted, and said what a pleas- ure it was to hear a Commis. sioner say that she had no problems. She related many episodes to us which were both instructive and humorous. She touched on so many things and everything she said held every- one's attention. She talked of the time she was at the Alask- an Highway and started a Guide Company of Lone Guides and how difficult it was to do a Good Turn, in a place where everyone had to help with everything. Miss Milne also told us of going to Greece and of the Chief Guide Lady Baden Powell telling her to take Guiding into the Hills of Greece. There were so many topics that it is im- possible to relate them all | Lake and make her "Horace" did not disappoint us, Everyone agreed that they could have sat all night and listened to her. She truly is a wonder- ful person, and any Guide who misses the chance to go to Doe acquaint- ance is really missing the op- 'portunity to meet a Real Girl Guide, a Great Lady, and a Humourist. We in Blackstock will long remember the Mother and Daughter Banquet of 1964, be- cause "Horace" made it such an evening that rémains with you. Previous to Miss Milne's intro- duction, Mrs. -Dalton Dorrell presented Service Stars to the Guiders, Brown Owl Mrs. Roy Turner, 7 years, Captain Mrs. Ivan Thompson, 6 years, Lieut. Mrs. James Marlow, 6 years, and Tawny Owl Mrs. Ernest Swain, 4 years. At the conclusion of Miss Milne's speech, Captain Thomp- son thanked her for coming and for really 'making' the evening.
