As we lift our voices in those beloved Christmas carols, may our hearts be filled anew with the wondrous spirit that = came to carth on the Holy Night when Ile was born and the May we find fresh inspiration in the message - of "Peace on Earth, Good Will toward Men," to guide us at the Christnias season, and always, of THURSDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1961 * Che @hristmas ~ Message "Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, "This child is destined to be a sign which men reject; and vou to shall be pierced to the heart. Many in Israel will stand or fall because of him, and thus the secret thoughts of many will be laid bare." Luke 34-5. The New English Bible translation. The secret thoughts of many are still being laid bare by the influence of the child and later the Man of whom Simeon prophesied. He has been rejected by all of us at times. He has been acknowledged by most of us in the Western world, officialy, at least. How great has His in- fluence actually been? It is difficult to assess the true Christian influence in the world. We are told so often of the harm Christianity has done, of its slips and failures and downright perver- sions. We know these things so well. They are like the headlines of the sensation newspapers. We hear much less often of the slow quiet healing that goes on day and night among the people's of the world when true Christian in- - fluence gets achance to work. baby, grew to manhood with.great promise and went about doing good. A We so often forget this part of it. We remember the great drama of his birth, his flight into Egypt, Herod's slaying of the children, the threats of the pharisees, the trial and condemnation, and the risen Christ. It is a great story. ~~ How often we leave it at that and forget that what he was really felling us was to do as he did. To go about doing good, every day all year in and year out. Toward the end of His lie one of the disciples said to Him, "Lord what can have happened, that you mean to disclose yourself to us alone and not to the world? Jesus replied, "Anyone who loves me will heed what 1 say'; John 14-22-3. Ed And so it goes from action to action. Doing what ~ Christ would have us do, is the true celebration of His birth and the only way we can make His influence go around the world effectively. It takes a lot of decent living to make a wholesome world and there is a lot of decent living being done, let us never forget it. This is the age of catharsis. We know all that is wrong. We need so much to know more about what is right with the world if we would have "Peace on earth;-good will to men." As' you are well aware the fine showing put up by the softball entries in Port Perry in three short years of competition has been a great credit to the town, This reason alone should be all the encouragement needed by the town folk to push your campaign well over the top. Dave Johnson's Junior Club won the Ont. Junior 'C' Championship in their second year of play in 1960, and with any luck at all would have won again this year. Your Intermediate club run by Rod Foster has always been strong and have en- tered a Bantam boys team which.' proved surprisingly strong for their first year. gd There is no doubt that the softball future of Port Perry is very encow- aging and warrants the floodlight} which will mean so much to each team, Gate receipts should greatly improve and players from visiting clubs as well as home clubs will have more time to travel, this leading to even hetter competition at all games.
