ONTARIO RIDING | | | On Monday, May 29th, all the pro- vinces, and the Yukon and Northwest | Territories, will begin the observance of Commonwealth Technical Training ' Week. We will be joined in this enterprise by the United Kingdom and most of the countries and territories of the Commonwealth. Aden and Hong Kong observed the Week in April. British Honduras, Rhodesia, Nyasaland, Sing- apore, and probably India, will set a- side a week this coming autumn, y All the other member countries will be focusing attention on the increas- ing importance of technical training during the same week we have chosen in Canada--May 29 to June 4. His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh, who has originated and sponsored a number of important pub- lic service projects, conceived the idea of a Commonwealth Tcchnical Train- ing Week during a visit to Australia where he witnessed an Australian Ap- prenticeship Week in progress. He was much impressed and felt that here was a means of acquainting "the public with the effect of modern |- technology and science on productiv- ity, employment and education. He also considercd such a Week an ideal way to publicizé effectively the tech- nical training programs and oppor- le. At the same time it would provide an opportunity to urge students to stay at school longer to prepare them- selves for employment. The idea found ready acceptance in the United Kingdom and a slogan was adopted -- "Training Today for To- morrow". - This slogan is particularly well suited to the present endeavour because it stresses the need for long range planning. It emphasizes the idea that proper preparation now pro- mises dividends in the future. In announcing the observance of Technical Training Week, His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh, stated the purpose of the Week so well that I think it would be useful to repeat his words: "The material prosperity of any country depends, to a very large ex- tent, upon the general level of techni- cal knowledge and efficiency. "It is also in the interest of the members of every rising generation to prepare - themselves for careers which have bright and expanding pros- pects. There is obviously a great temptation to accept the easy way which is to take an unskilled job just because it appears to be well paid. No one with skill and intelligence should jeopardize his future by the lure of quick returns. "The Commonwealth Technical Printed Ln' BOSTON, LOS ANGEL "LONDON . It is also hoped that schools and parents will take note of these possibilities which can mean such a lot to the fu- ture of each generation of young peo- ple as they decide their careers. "Finally IT hope that the general public will get to know a bit more] about: the training for the technical! skills which make their modern stands} ards of living possible". The Federal Government is keenly interested in technical and vocational training as the principal means of! developing a skilled work force. The | Prime Minister. is particularly inter- ested in this field, not only with res-| pect to Canada but with regard tol our responsibilities towards develop- ing countries. I am pleased to say that he will be making a special state- ment to the Canadian people with re-: gard to our observance of the Week; ~ on Sunday evening. In his address before the United | Nations last year the Prime Minister cited the importance of establishing a bank of éxperts to help developing countries to create a trained work force and increase their standard of living. The importance of such a ven- ture is becoming increasingly appar-|$; ent, Canada has never trained enough skilled workers for our own needs, much less providing assistance for other countries. Early this year, His Excellency, the cs Governor General, proclaimed the week of May 20th to June 4th as Commonwealth Technical Training Week in Canada, and urged Canadians in all walks of life to take an active interest in the observance and the ob- jectives of the Week. y Briefly, the broad objectives of the Week in Canada are: ' 1. To create more public awareness of the excellent career opportunities which exist in technical, trade, and other vocational fields. 2. To stimulate the establishment of more" apprenticeship and other in- plant training programs. To convince young people of the necessity of planning a career and staying in school until graduation, and to impress upon parents and youth the importance of education to a person's employment security. 4. To encourage adults to upgrade their skills and improve their edu- cation, and to stimulate the estab- . lishment of more adult education and training programs related to the world of work. 5. To bring those groups directly and eral in Toronto, indirectly concerned with education and training closer together for the outing on Wednegday when they general benefit of the country. 5 JULY 4. to the park.
