J. Gibson in the Chair, Deputy-Reeve W. T, Har- ris, Councillors Arthur T. Cox, Robt, Kenny, Irving Boyd. MINUTES of Regular Meeting of Jan. 9th were adopted as typed on motion, Carried. DEPUTATIONS -- Two Engineers from R. K. Kilborn and Associates appeared before Council as arranged to discuss a sewerage system, Mr. H. E. Archibald explaiped that one of the first requirements would be a preliminary Engineers report and that they had offered in 1957 to give this report for $900.00 and that their price would still stand if Council are interested in such a report. It was explained that there are three main systems, a secondary plant requiring a full-time man, a primary plant requiring a part-time man, and t+" '=d a lagoon plant, r. Archibald recommended that a sewage lagoon system be investigated first, to see if suitable land could be obtained in a proper location. The "land for the lagoon should be large enough to provide one acre for each one hundred persons and to be ar- ranged so that the lagoon can be added to to take care of growth in population. The Tagoon takes the place of the sewage 'plant by 1. Seepage into the soil - 2. Evaporation 3, Run-off. Stage Construction was recommen- ded so that the project could be fi- nanced in stages and the charge to the ratepayers could be. as follows: 1. Chargé on Tax rate (All taxpayers) 2. A connection charge ~8:-A-local- improvement: charge: bes ing an annual charge per foot frontage. Mr. Archibald explained further that it would take approximately 8 to 6 months to get the preliminary work done before starting, that the *4on should be a minimum of one- q @er mile away from the town and would have a depth of water In itot from three to five feet, that the sewer pipes' would be laid at a depth of seven feet and lower. Mr. Hamilton re- quested an area along the C:N.R. right-of-way but Council informed him that the said area would be under the Department of Transport at Peterborough. A further request was made for parking space for his car during the Carp Derby. This request was approved, MR. STOREY E. LETTER from the Ontario Provin- cial Police dated Jan. 16th, 1961. "I Workmen's would like to point out that the pre-|- sent policy for Auxiliary Police is that they would be recruited at the ratio of one to one of the existing Municipal Police Force." Cameron that for auxiliary Police re purposes of Emergency Mea- sures that he pick two men who are willing to act and look after their in- structions and then make arrange- ments for uniforms. LETTER from the Ontario Hydro, dated January 12th, 1961. "Ontario's peak power requirements in 1960 in- creased by approximately 8.5 per cent over the previous year compared with the long-term average of 6.5%." Councillor Arthur T. Cox reported on- the Cooking Demonstration and two weeks advertising to, promote the use of Electricity. -- He algo stated | that it was recommended that a sur- vey of the town be made re appli- ances in use and that a grant be made | to any consumers changing over from a two to a three wire service. Coun- cillor Cox summed up the situation by stating that more Hydro has to be sold in order to keep.the Hydro rate at the present level according to the information received at the last Hydro Meeting. Owers, Supervisor of Sewage Works; Ontario Water Resources - Commission, re places where lagoon systems have been installed. Filed for reference. RESOLUTION -- That a grant of $26.00 be given to any Hydro con- sumer, wishing to make a complete change from 2 to 8 wire service, and to conform with Port Perry Hydro Regulation now in force. COUNCIL decided that a grant of $10.00 be given to the Salvation Army for the year 1961. : : LETTER from Proctor & Redfern dated January 17th, 1961--Civil and Consulting Engineers. : The Federal Gov. decided recently to finance and subsidize sewage treat- ment plant and trunk sanitary sewer projects through the agency of the Central Mortgage & Housing Corpora- tion; "On projects approved for sub- sidy, the Federal Government may (1) Loan an amount up to two- thirds. of the cost paid for works com- |" pleted prior to' March 31st, 1963 at their comparitively low borrowing rate. S.A. The percentage of 95.12% was a- chieved, which is a very high passing standard for any club, Below are the dances passed by our members. Hydro Showtime Stars Electrical Appliances An unusual stage show--in which the stars are modern electrical appli- ances--will be in Port Perry on Feb.! 7th, 1961. ~--Hydro-Showtime,-sponsored-by-the Port Perry Hydro System and Ont. Hydro, will be presented in Masonic Hall," Queen St., under the auspices of Blue Ray Chapter Eastern Star. During the two-hour show, the au- dience will be treated to a cooking and laundering demonstration, a mo- tion picture and a practical lighting demonstration, They will have a chance to examine major appliances displayed by local dealers, who have also donated a numher of small ap- pliances as prizes. Lois Hearst, Ontario Hydro's home | service consultant, will preside in the demonstration kitchen. Aided by a variety of electrical" appliances, she will prepare entire meals on-the-spot. She will also. demonstrate an auto- matic washer and dryer. As a "Certified Residential Light- ing Consultant" with the Academy of Lighting . Arts, Miss Hearst is well qualified to give a. practical demon- stration of "Light for Living", point-| ing out the advantages and beauty of a proper lighting scheme. The evening's program will include a graphic description of all-electric living in the film "Meet Mrs. Swen- son" and a short film strip illustrat. ing electric home heating. Friends and former - residents of Port Perry will be interestéd in the television show "Neighbours" which is scheduled to appear on Sunday, Feb. 6th at 2 p.m. on the new channel 9, CFTO Toronto, Some weeks -ago the personnel of the T.V. station were in' Port Perry and vicinity taking pictures and in- terviewing folk to appear on this program. Home Destroyed By Fire Fire destroyed the farm home of Mr. Keith Crosier, occupied by Mr. McQuinn on Scugog Island on Monday evening of this week. The first person. to notice the fire was Russel. Pogue, who smelled the smoke, before he located the source of the fire. Port Perry Fire Brigade were called but were unable to save the frame building. A small amount of furniture was saved. The family were away at fhe time of the fire. Celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary Saturday night in Caesarea Com- munity Hall, where friends had ga- thered for a Euchre Party, a most unique event took place. games had been played a couple of the neighbours called on Mr. and Mrs. Russel Harran and brought them to the hall, where by this time = table centred with a. lovely wedding cake and bouquet of mums was the centre of attraction, Mr. Milton Fisher, on be- "half "of the community presented the Bride and Groom of 50 years with a coffee table and matching step tables. Mr. and Mrs. Harran, 'tho taken completely by surprise made fitting replies. The ladies of the Firemen's Auxiliary served a dainty lancheon and a pleasant Social time wag: 'spent. Russel Harran, Caesarea and Rose After a few | Browing, who was born in England, but by that time was working in Tox- onto, were married in Toronto, Jan. 28th, 1911, by the late Rev. Byron H. Stauffer. Mr. Harran, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Harran, was born in Caesarea and outside of service in World War I, has spent his life in Caesarea. Together they operated the general store for twenty years, until they retired in 1947. This October will make fifty years of taxpaying for them in the Town- ship of Cartwright. Relatives and friends from Oshawa, Toronto and Guelph visited Mr. and Mrs. Harran during the past week and Sunday, Jan, 29th a family din- ner was held at their home. (A telegram from Premier Frost and cards and phone calls from vari- ous parts of Ontario were received, by Mr. and Mrs. Harran. Jr. Farmers Hold First Meeting Of the Year On Tuesday, January 24th the mon- thly meeting of the Port Perry Junior Farmers was held in the high school at Port Perry. This was the first meeting of the year with our new executive in office. John Sommerville gave an interesting and informative talk on "More Effective Meetings". He outlined several important parts in regards to the procedure of our meetings, reminding us not to take -| too much time on the business and cutting other parts of the meeting short. 'Al Blades showed a film on farm safety particularly with the tractor. It showed "how" and "how not to" get out when stuck, and emphasized the fact that tractors when on the public highways should have some kind of marker on them to denote a slow moving vehicle. Lunch was served to us by John Sommerville and Bruce Leask, it was very enjoyable; after this the meet. ing was adjourned, The next meeting of the Port Perry Junior Farmers will be held in the Port Perry High School, on Tuesday, February 28th, at 8.30 pm. All in- terested rural young men and women in the Port Perry area are asked to keep this date in mind and are invited to attend this and all meetings of the Port Perry Junior Farmers. 93rd Birthday Congratulations to 'Mr. Silas Rey- nolds, Lilla St., Port Perry, who is today (Feb. 2nd) celebrating his 93rd birthday, Mr. Reynolds who is in good health will spend the day with his family and vtlose friends. Congratulations Friends and neighbours extend best wishes and birthday greetings to Mrs. Geo. A, Raines, who has attained her 80th anniversary today (Feb. 2nd). Murs. Raines is enjoying good health, Blackstock Fair Seeking Regional Livestock Show for This Year The annual meeting of the Cart- wright Agricultural Society was held in Blackstock January 28th. There was a very good attendance, 22 mem- Some were there from Port Perry, Brooklin and Osh- awa. The financial report for the year was favourable. $1727 was paid out in prize money for Blackstock Fair this year. The report showed a balance of $346.30 for carry-over to next year. Reports were received from dele- gates to district meetings. There is 'a move on foot to have the admission | ~~ charge to all fairs set at 75 cents. The meeting voted in favour of keep- ing the present charge of fifty cents. A committee of Messrs. Neil Mal- colm, Neil Werry, and Merrill Van- Camp was set up to try and get a regional livestock show for Black- stock Fair this year.
