"For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder; His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the Mighty God, Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace." These beautiful words of the "Messiah" taken from the Bible reflects the promise, in song, upon which our Christian religion is based. "Fhe com- munication of thought by music was brought to great perfection by Handel in his wonderful oi :- torio. For two hundred years it has conveyed its message with overwhelming power wherever and however it has been sung. If the Christian religion is to prosper the com munication of the message must continue through- out the centuries ahead as it has done in the past. It must continue with the impact upon the mind and the emotions that we are able to feel when we listen to such great music. Communication has evolved to the point where we have a very complex system of\ relaying all kinds of messages at a high rite of speed. Never has mankind been so closely in touch with his neighbour, yet: "Why do the nations so furiously rage together, and why do the people imagine a vain thing ?" Something is wrong with our communication. We touch each other and yet we do not touch each at the right time or in the right way. The weight of accumulated knowledge of man is being passed on to the generations who come, bending their shoulders to accept the yoke, but we do not seem able to sort out facts given to us in a way that enables us to live together peaceably. In the abyss of life that stretches out before us we are unable to join hands. What can save us? We are mere amateurs at this game of life. We live but a short time individually, then we die and the next generation must learn a great deal all over again for itself. Christ seemed to understand this discouraging process and He gave us a new hope. Ie said not by knowledge alone but by love would mankind be saved. There are many kinds of love but Christ meant the kind that reaches out to another in ser- vice of the highest order because true love gives insight into the needs of the person beloved. We can have peace on earth in spite of atomic weapons. radio-active fall-out, over-population and all our other ills if we learn to love others enough to put ourselves on the cross for them if necessary. We will only know if itis genuinely necessary by studying the other person with true affection for them in our minds and hearts. Only then will our sights be clear, only then will the focus be correct. The great and terrible message must go on, the message of wonderful love. | * hat, Jdeed, Ts Christmas? £ Aa i AR -- on A - / i hat, indeed, is this holiday, that we rush + [AEA and tear about, decorating trees and mantlepieces, giving gifts and gathering about the festive board?
