The annual meeting of Durham County Trustees and Ratepayers Asso- ciation was held in Blackstock on June 8rd, It began by a sumptious banquet served by the Blackstock women's In- stitute in the Recreation Centre. About ninety Trustees and Ratepayers from all localities in the County, stood, while Rev. P. Romeril said Grace. The President, M. Hobbs, tendered the thanks and Mrs. E. Larmer, suitably acknowledged it. The open meeting assemled in the Cartwright Central School where many had expressed a desire to have @ look around, and by the way, the trustees and staff received many com- pliments, A short program of various musical numbers was well presented by our Music supervisor, Mr. J, Day. 'Special speaker was Mr, Copping, an official employed by the Board of Edu- cation of Metropolitan Toronto, whose duty it was to see that they received their proper share of the city's school taxes, Our two "school systems-- (Public and Separate)--made it very airzicult to manage. Many assessors took it for granted if you were a Roman Catholic you would be a Separate School supporter, which was not always the "case, and many Public School ratepayers (Pro- testant) was 'paying taxes to the Separate School, because his tenant was a Roman Catholic. The Public Sehool in Toronto has lost thousands of dollaars, by local- taxpayers and Corporations being recorded in the wrong category. Many Public School - supporters, never took the trouble to see' how they were listed. During the year over four hundred cases had gone through his: offic for placing in proper category. It was a very thoro' "discourse of the Assessors problems - and although he substituted for Rev. Mills, who was ill, he did an excellent job." The nominating committee made their report and meeting closed with . the "Queen". \ The regular meeting of Blackstock L.0.L. No. 188, June 1st was well at- tended.
