Fall Rally United Church, Whitby, October 23rd, 1958 The Fall Rally of the Ophawa Pres- bytery Women's Association was well attended recently when Mrs. J. L. Hal- "penny, Past President of the Dominion Council W.A. was the guest speaker at the afternoon assemby. Mrs. Hal- penny has had a great deal of ex- perience in many phases of W.A. work but her most recent interest as been with the Senior Citizens of the Church. The sibject of her address was "What Can The Church Provide For the Sen- for Citizen?" Mrs. Halpenny spoke of the rapid passing of time and the present-day life expectancy of many more years of activity than ever be- fore, and asked the women to think about this new problem. With more years to live and the early retirement age activities should be made available to the Senior member of the Church, they must be needed by the Church, as 'well as being provided with their " Spiritual needs. What are our spirit- ual needs. What is our Spiritual needs as we get older 7--we need to be want- ed, to be loved, to be useful and to be ysed. Activities in the Church as well as in the community and the home should include all age levels. In the past year a great deal has been said and done in regard to the Youth with the result that senior members have been almost set aside. Youth needs the experience and the example of the older people just as much as the older people need the vigor and activity of youth, each age level must be in- cluded in many 'programmes of the Church, THe new and modern type of visiting was. also explained by Mrs. Halpenny, when the Church visitor makes a friendly call rather than the formal call formerly made. The visit- or might spend the time doing some useful service for the senior member, such as a bit of shopping, or baking, tidying up, or even change library books, or any number of useful and thoughtful things. It was suggested that the senior members not only be urged to continue to attend church services, but that they be called for and taken home again in a car, Mrs. Halpenny had been introduced by Mrs. W. C. Ives, of Bowmanville, President of the Bay of Quinte Con- ference W. A, who had "previously given a report on the Leadership Day attended by Mrs. Ives and Mrs. A. A. Crowle at Albert College, Bellville re- cently. After her report it was de- cided to have the same sort of pro- gram held at intervals for the Oshawa Presbytery. The first Leadership Day will be at Trinity United Church in Bowmanville with Mrs. Ives and Mrs. Crowle in charge. At the morning session Mrs. L. F. Richardson, of Whitby, first vice- president of the Prebytery W. A. wel- comed the members on behalf of the Whitby W.A. whose members served a very delicious lunch at noon hour. After the minutes and reports the members broke up into several discus- sion groups. One. half hour was al- lowed for these buzz sessions and then each convener spoke to the entire membership on the results of the dis- cussions. Mrs. Ross Hall sang "Come Spirit of the Living God" by Oleys Speaks accompanied at the organ by Mrs. J. Beaton, after which the Rev. J. M. Smith held Holy Communion. Mrs. George Werry, Vice-President of St. Andrew's W.A, conducted the de- votional service in the afternoon carry- ing out the theme of the day "Continue in prayer--with thanksgiving". Mrs. Werry said there were so many differ- end kinds of prayer--but that each type had its place in our lives, We have been told to "Pray without ceas- ing--be prayerful -- and to let our wants be known to God" but that we must not forget the prayers of thanks- giving, The devotional period con- cluded with the singing of "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Mrs. E, Cornish, President of the Presbytery W.A. told of her three days at the Dominion Council meetings -in To- ronto. She said there were over six thousand local W. A, groups with a total membership of over two hundred and seventeen thousand women. Mrs: Chas. Naylor also told of her day at Dominion Council and said she thought more members should plan to attend the meetings. Mrs, W. Teeple and Mrs. L. F. Richardson gave reports on their attendance at the Bay_ of Quinte Conference meetings. It was announced that the annual meeting would be held in Tyrone in the (Spring of 1969), and that Mrs. K. R. Rose, of Toronto, President of the Dominion Council W.A. would be the guest speaker. During the lunch hour those seated at the head table with Mrs. Ewart Cornish, President of the Prebytery W.A, were--Rev. J. M. Smith and Mrs. Smith, Mrs. J. L. Halpenny, Mrs. C.
