The meeting opened with the hymn "Faith of our Fathers", after which Rev. Mr, Braham led us in prayer. Betty Reader read the Scripture les- son, and Elva Martyn read our story: on "Faith". The roll call was an- swered by something we would do if we had the time and money' --with travelling winning the most' votes. During the business meeting the Cancer Fund was discussed, and ar- rangements made to collect for it. It was planned to have our annual pic- nic on the afternoon of Aug. 6th, at Stephensons Point. Plans for a bak- ing sale in August were also discus- sed. To open the program Elva Martyn read a poem by Edna Jaques on "Faith". Betty Reader gave a talk on Home Courses in Education which are conducted by the Dept. of Educa- tion for anyone who wishes to fur- ther his or her school standing while at home. Evelyn Redman then con- fused the group with a contest on "Parts of the Body". This was won by Joyce Heayn. Lunch was served : rr > They are Mrs. Roger Hope, Mrs. Alan Red- man and Mr, and Mrs. L. The trip was under the supervision of the Ontario Departmént of Agri- culture with -H. L. Fair, Agricultural Representative, Al. Blades, Ass't' Re- presentative, and Wilda Gordon, Home | Economist, in attendance. Mr. and Mrs, J. Mitchell and Bert' On arrival at the: 0. A, C. the group was taken on a conducted bus ) 5 honour of her daughter, Louise's ap- proaching marriage. On Saturday, July 5th, Mr. and Mrs. Wes Routley and daughter Helen at- tended the marriage of Helen Louise Hamill, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Barry Hamill, of Manilla, to Mr. Wm. Sallans, eldest son of Mr, and Mrs, Harry Sallans, of Demorestville, in the Manilla United Church. The cere- mony was performed by Rev. Hunter, of Oakwood. - Mr. and Mrs, Douglas Ashton en- joyed a motor trip to Montreal and points in New York State, during the holiday week-end. ; Mr. 'and Mrs. Edgar Heron were en- tertained recently at a surprise party tour of the college grounds. . On this tor :the boys and. girls- saw the Ont. Veterinary College; the Macdonald In.' stitute and other buildings associated with the 0.A.C. Following a complimentary lunch, separate tours were arranged for the Homemaking and Agricultural Clubs. The highlight of the day for the Homemaking Club girls was a tour of Macdonald Institute, Dr. Mar- garet McCready, Principal of Mac- donald Institute, welcomed the girls' and gave a brief outline of the cour- ses offered by the. Institute. She en- couraged the girls to continue their studies an dto take advantage of the many opportunities in the field of Home Economics today, ~~ The 4-H Agricultural Club boys and | girls were taken on a tour of the 600 acre Arkell Farm which is the Live- stock [Research Centre operated by the 0.A.C., Guelph. On the farm the Swine Research Laboratory, the Beef Sire Testing Unit, the Steer Feeding Barn and the Turkey Research Stas tion are located. 'The boys and girls toured the Steer Feeding barn where the management practices were out- lined. Here all different combinations of feed are tested on Hereford, Short- horn and Angus steers. The Swine Research Laboratory_work was out- lined for the visitors by Prof. R. P. Forshaw. At the Beef Sire Testing Unit bulls are tested for rate of gain per day per pound of feed fed. Bulls enter the 168 day test at 7% months, and are graded according to the re- , sults of the test period. This is dome |' to obtain Advanced Registry of beef bulls and for the over-all improve- ment of the beef breeds. ' On return to the college from: Ar- kell a tour was conducted over the, Forage Crop Plots managed by .the explanation of the type of work car- ried on was given. The importance of good pasture and hay seed mix- tures combined with good soil man- agement was emphasized. . Of interest to all was the tour of the new 0.A.C. Physical Education Building. It is one of the most mo- dern buildings of its type in North America. Assisting on this bus tour were several Ontario County 4-H Club Leaders--Mrs. James Smith, Ather- ley; Mrs. John Bray, Udney; Mrs. W. Don Smith, Beaverton, R. 1; Mrs. R. J. McElroy, Beaverton, R. 2; Mrs. Al- bert Cooper, Brooklin, R. 1; Mrs. R. Harden, Brougham; Mrs. Chas. In- gleton, Uxbridge, R. 3; Mrs. C. Ash- enhurst, Uxbridge, R. 3; and Mrs. Da- vid Crosier, Stouffville, Boys and girls from 4-H 'Agricul tural Clubs in Brant, Grey and Wa- terloo Counties also participated in this very enjoyable and highly edu- cational tour of the 0.A.C., July 2nd.
