As soon as the building was com- pleted, the installation of the latest type of dial equipment was started by the Northern. Electric Company. This equipment had been designed to meet the specific needs of Port Perry subscribers. The installation work was finished ouly a few days ago and testing the entire equipment will continue almost until the time of the \ - During the past few months, Bell workers visited homes, stores and offices in the Port Perry exchange area to install dial telephones or to adapt telephones already for dial operation. They also showed each sub- scriber and his family or staff the correct way of operating the dial. This instruction in using the dial telephone was accelerated as the cut- over date approached and was carr- ied out by trained demonstrators who. telephoned customers and gave them an opportunity to dial test calls to ensure that the telephone users had mastered the technique of dialing. 8 UR NEW TELEPHONE NUMBER Is | LV a ih Wh YUkon 3-2227/ Ivan Gray CARTAGE Port Perry "Ont. .t 2 mir ---- ¥ Greer & Kelly NEW DIAL NUMBER YUkon 9- 2141 Jan ,.e.,.e..o. Port Perry's New Fire Alarm System A modern emergency reporting system will soon take over the job of protecting Port Perry homes and of- fices from the ravages of fire and other disasters, . | The system will be installed by The Bell Telephone Company and will} operate through the telephone net- work. It will go into use July 6 when the exchange here is converted to dial operation. The emergency system will con- sist of seven special telephories In- stalled in the homes of members of the volunteér fire brigade. ~ To report a fire, a person would merely dial the number assigned to the emergency reporting system-- YUkon 65-2845. All seven of the special telephones-will ring simultan- eously, The first fireman to answer will abtain the details, and using a key associated with his telephone, will start the siren wailing. The seven telephones connected with the special emergency line cannot be used for outgoing calls -- although other members of the department can listen in to the fire report--but siren codes can be used to let all know the approximate location of the blaze. J. W. Lowry, Bell Telephone man- ager for this region, said that "effec- tive fire protection is dependent on the speed in which an emergency can be reported. Port Perry's fire alarm system has been designed specifically to meet the needs of this community. Similar systems have been placed in service in other Ontario communities by the Bell company in recent years and the results have been gratifying."
