Each week the fire brigade is called out to stop a grassfire that has gotten out of hand and become a menace instead - «of a friend. So whether you are cleaning out a small yard or doing a bigger brush job, do observe: all the precautions! Do start your fire on a windless "day! Do make sure all rubbish is clear+ ed away in the areas of the fire! Do have water or loose earth or some means of control at hand in case the blaze becomes too fierce! Do make sure that every ember is out before you leave the fire! Do make sure that the youngsters in the area don't carry away blaging branches or otherwise spread the fire into rubbish or underbrush that has not been cleared away! If there is a slight breeze you ghou- Id start your fire in such a place that the breeze slows down the progress | of the blaz¢ rather than fanning it into an unburned area at too great a pace! Remember that a fire will create its own breeze! You may be sure your fire brigade will do their very best to help you if you get into trouble, but don't let things get that far. They may be busy fighting someone else's car- lessness when you need them or the roads may be impassable or the water supply low. No! its far better to prevent a fire than to have to fight it, DO BE CAREFUL!
