an 3a Ha, SEA LA RSE AY NY AAR EAL LL feed SERINE Lata 8--THE PORT PERRY STAR, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 31st, 1957 Gordon L. Hill Heads Ontario Farmers' Union "We are now recognized as a Na- tional Farm Organization, in Ottawa and are fast becoming the spokesman of Interprovincial Farm Union Coun- cil, when addressing the Sixth An- nual Convention of Ontario Farmers' Union in Memorial Hall, 0.A.C., at Guelph, Tuesday, October 22nd. 450 delegates were in attendance, being the largest Convention to date. "Farm Unions, six or seven years ago were ridiculed and classed as radicals, It is significant that the Liberal Party now claims that they must become radical if they hope to again get on their feet," continued the speaker. "Although the past Government ignor- ed warnings made by Farm Unions as to agricultures fast 'deteriorating economical position, those conditions have become prevalent and while we must give our new Government time to put their house in order, farmers must not sit idle but continue to build their grassroots organization and to have pride in it and themselves," said-Mr. Patterson. Mr. Cleve Kidd, recently elected President of Ontario Federation of Labor spoke on farmer-lahor relations and said that no group is so isolated that its welfare is of no concern to others. Referring to the decreasing farm cash income, Mr. Kidd claimed that his labor organization was re- minded that a recession in one section only, soon spreads. Convention resolutions passed in- cluded the present Hog Direction Sys- tem and asked that before a hog vote is taken that the O.F.U. should be | Consulted regarding the wording ot - the ballot. The Unfon has always supported the principle of Marketing REECE Boards but the Convention did not favour the hog assembly point system. It suggested that the Co-Op Market- ing Board should sell and direct hogs straight from the farmers' stable to buyers. When quoting gross farm in- come, Government Bepartments were requested to also quote net cash farm income as a true agricultural econom- ic picture. As Ontario Federation of Agriculture organizations merely ask- ed for a floor price of from 13 to 16 cents under skim milk powder, while 0.F.U. asked fer 20c and the Federal Government set the price at 17c,, the Concentrated Milk Producers Organ- ization was requested to consult with Ontario Farmers' Union before re- questing any floor price hereafter. That butter be allowed to find its own price level on the market, that the Federal Government be asked to estab- lish a full parity support price and that the difference between the market price and the parity price should be payed direct to the cream producer through means of deficiency payments, was another of the 70 reso- lutions passed by the Convention, A further resolution requested the Fed- eral Government to include represent- ation of Interprovineial Farm Union Council on the Canadian delegation to be headed by Trade Minister Church- ill and which will visit England short- ly. Positive opposition -to any in- crease in Rural Bell Telephone rates was also unanimously supported. President A. V. Cormack reported that the organization now has 800 Locals in Ontario with 7 new County organizations having been established during the past year, and which or- ganization is composed of grassroots direct dues-paying membership and truly controlled by its membership.
