Poison Ivy the Vacation Spoiler Poison Ivy is often referred to as public nuisance number one to the va- cationist, for while a few people are seemingly unaffected, the majority can be made most miserable by an encounter with it. It is a vine which has alternate leaves, each of which is divided into three distinct leaflets, usually waxy in appearance, 2 to 4 inches in length and pointed at the tip. The leaves turn red or yellow in the fall. While some other vines also have leaves composed of three leaflets, the Field Crops Branch of the Ontario Department of Agricul- contact with Poison Ivy, it is best to keep away from any vine or low grow- ing shrub with this type of leaf. Semi-shaded areas such as along the edges of wood lots, close to fence lines, or on the trunks of trees are all places where Poison Ivy may be found. It can and does grow in cities, but is more commonly found in the vicinity of summer cottages or camping sites. Direct contact with the plant is not necessary to cause irritation as the plant oil which creates the inflamma- tion can penetrate clothing, be en- countered on tools or even from the smoke from burning Poison Ivy plants. Irritation caused in these ways is just as distressing as that caused by direct contact with the plant. ents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Harrison | Whitehead, Mr. Calvin Way and lady | ture advises that in order to avoid, Many chemicals such as 24-D, brushkill, sodium clorate, or amonium sulfamate form the basis of sprays to control Poison Ivy. A new chemical which kills the weed but does not af- fect shrubs or trees is Amino triazole, If applied when the plants are in full leaf at the rate of 1 to 114 lbs. in 26 gallons of water, or 4 tablespoons to a gallon, until the plants are wet, this chemical gives good results. It does not act as quickly as the other chemi- cals mentioned, but is more effective in obtaining a complete kill, A pamphlet entitled "Poison Ivy" may be obtained from either the Ont- ario Department of Agriculture or the Ontario Department of Health, Par- liament Buildings, Toronto. This pamphlet contains colored .illustra- tions of the weed, control methods and first aid treatment for distress caused by exposure to it.
