---- Dial Telephones on the Way Contract for the construction of the exchange building to house equipment for Port Perry's new dial telephone system has been awarded to W. F. Mercer of Oshawa, J. W. Lowry, Bell Telephone manager announced this week. To be located on Queen Street, the exchange building was specifically designed to meet Port Perry's expand- ing telephone needs, It will house an advanced type of dial switching ap- paratus and associated equipment. Work on the building is expected to get under way shortly, Coincident with the opening of the new dial office scheduled for -next summer 2-letter b-figure numbers will be put in to use here, The exchange designation will be Yukon followed by the number § ac- companied by four other digits. These numbers will be contained ina supple- mentary directory issued in Port Perry just prior to the change over. The change to the 2-letter 5-figure number- ing plan will permit Port Perry ta fit in with the continent wide long dis- tance dialing program being progres- sively introduced throughout Canada and the United States. Apart from taking care of the ex- isting needs the new dial equipment is expected to meet the telephone needs of Port Perry for some time to come. --_---- Teen Town By Allan Bailey At the Parents night dance on Fri- day evening, 10 adult guests, 16 teen- age guests and 76 members attended. This was Port Perry Teen Town's first anniversary and to mark the oc- casion Mr. Tom Harris presented our President, Bruce Taylor with a gake containing 1 candle, and a happy an- niversary inscription written on it. Jimmy Taylor informed us that through the year we have had 17 dances; 1 weiner roast; a Bowling League; and at the present time, we have a softball league operating each Saturday afternoon. Jimmy has done a marvellous job in Teen Town and through him, this club has stayed a- - live and prospered greatly. He might "be called a "Permanent Chaperone" a and again he gave the invitation which has been offered many times before, that his door is always open to any teenager who wants advice, or who has any ideas which will help teen town. Obituary MRS. FRANK A. GERROW The death occurred at the Port Perry Community Hospital on Wed., June 26, of Ethel Louise Bush, widow Mrs. Gerrow had been in hospital for four wecks following a stroke six weeks ago. She was in her 76th year. Scugog United Church. Mrs. Gerrow was married in 1904. Her husband predeceased her in 1948. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Al- ma Owen of Port Perry and Mrs. John Davey (Olive) of Whitby and two sons, Anson and Donald Gerrow of Scugog Island, Also surviving are three grandsons, Ronald Owens of Port Perry and Roy and James. Gerrow of Scugog Island. The funeral was from the McDer- mott-Panabaker Funeral Chapel, Port Perry on Friday, June 28. Rev. J. K. Braham conducted the service. This is an in- crease of $5,41 1,214 from last year's total and almost a 10 Tillion dollar increase in two years. The county council last week ap- proved the equalized assessment of the county as set out by County As- sessor GoD. Hepditeh, In every case, the equalized assessment for each municipality within the county coin- cided with the local assessment set out by that municipality, There is also a population increase again this year, Total population of the county is set at 55,471, an increase of 1823 from last year. coffers will be Pickering Twp., which has the largest assessment, Pickering will share slightly more than 20 per- cent of the county costs. The town of Whitby will pay 17 percent of the county costs and Ajax 11.79 percent.
