Staniland Group 4--Mrs, Henry Shemilt Fair Solution STATEMENT BY: MR. W. J. PARKER, PRESIDENT, Manitoba Pool Elevators, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg, Manitoba. ' Everyone in Western Canada is con- cerned about the dispute betwétn the Canadian Pacific Compapy and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen, because any increased costs arising from a settlement will be paid, in sub- cause a railway strike would be most damaging to western farmers, It would appear that the CPR has offered a fair solution to the union, by accepting the findings of the board of conciliation, which would continue to use firemen on all passenger trains, at increased wages. Even in freight and yard service, diesel firemen with thrée years seniority would continue in sec- vice wuntil they became c¢nginemen; and those with less than three years service would retain their seniority and be given others jobs. Surely this looks after the moral claims of the union, while at the same time allow- ing the railroad to give its customers the advantages of scientific and tech- nological improvements. If the union, even after the safety factor is protected, insists on the hir- ing of new employees to fill positions which do not, in reality, exist, they will be takjng-backward step. Most railroaders know that so long as the safety factor is protected, a fireman on a diesel locomotive is not neces- sary. This seems to be pretty fragile ground on which to take costly strike action, Floors, BBD +++ PORT PERRY Take a permanent holiday from a chilly house.
