This was the third similar poll in recent weeks, all three having indicated a strong public demand for evening shopping privileges. The poll and Tor were as follows: KITCHEN R--by Gruneau Research Limited--76 per cent favored evening shopping. ALL OF ONTARIO -- by Gruneau Research Limited--69.4 per cent fav- ors evening shopping, ~ Recently, member newspapers in the Canadian Institute of Public Opinion (Gallop Poll) published results of a nation-wide study on the same issue, revealing that 699% of the public favor evening shopping. In the most recent (Ontario) sur- vey, as in those for Kitchener and for all Canada, the major objection proved to be the fear that if stores remained open. in the evenings, clerks might have to work longer hours. However, when it was: pointed out that store clerks were protected from exploita- tion under other provincial laws, -and that evening shopping would not result in longer hours, a good deal of such opposition was withdrawn, The Ontario survey covered rural areas, towns under 10,000 in popula- tion and cities. Of those who said they would like to have the stores open, one evening a week, the largest percentage was recorded in the towns, where 78.8 percent of thpse questioned were in favour, compared with 64.4 percent in cities and 74.8 percent in rural areas, ! Rural areas comprise 26.0 percent of Ontario's population, towns, 12.4 per cent, and cities 60.7 percent. | Ladies Monday +i Bowling League Standings-- Bon Bons--22 Black Balls--19 Jelly Beans--13 All Sorts--11 .
