Parkinson) At the time of this writing, we still _ have two local cage teams remaining in PLAY-DOWN COMPETITION, the P.P.H.S. BANTAMS and the PORT PERRY LIONS. Each of these teams came through with a good game. The P.P.H.S. BANTAMS DOWNING THE- WHITBY H.S. b6- 44 and the LIONS ROARING TO A 63-48 WIN at PICTON. Hence P.P, HM. S. BANTAMS will carry an 11 point lead to Whitby this Wednesday affernoon and the LIONS will have a 20 point lead when PICTON RE- TURN HERE SATURDAY NIGHT. In the BANTAM CONTEST we feel that the teams are very evenly match- ed and should our lads get by Whitby they will have beaten as good, if not a better team. The first meeting of the Bantams saw Whitby win 46-36, P.P.H.S. forced a play-off by winning "the last game of the season 43-29 in Whitby and then took 'the play-off GIRLS of P.P.H.8, and their coach Miss Nasmith on winning the LAKE ONTARIO Sr. 'B' TITLE for COSSA. PLAYER OF THE WEEK: JACK OWEN, 'who played heads up ball, under rather difficult circumstances in the quarter-final playdown at Picton Friday night. P.P.H.S. SR. GIRLS' TEAM GOES TO TORONTO During the past two months games have been in progress to establish Sr. and Jr, winners, first within our own district, Port Perry, Uxbridge and Whitby, them in the Lakeshore Dis- trict of which we are a part.. The Junior Girls 'played to-a tie position with Uxbridge and barely lost out in the decisive game on the Whitby floor. Following this the Senior Team;-yet undefeated in league games, went on to win against Port Hope, the winner of tho Eastern division of the Lake- shore District, Spectacular scoring by Lois Sanderson and Ruby Leask, |: and wonderful display of team work, soon put the Port Perry girls in the lead, to end with a score of 89-16. The opener 65-44 at Port Perry. BILL CORNISH lead the fine team effort with - 20 points, BOB CAR- NEGIE sank 9, RAYMOND DOUPE and FLOYD JAMES each had 7, BRIAN LEE got 2 and HILLUS WILBUR 1. The whole team check- ed well with Carnegie and Lee doing a fine job on guard, In the PICTON 'GAME the. LIONS 'got an early 11 point lead but failed to add to it before the three-quarter mark. In the final quarter the home lads cut PORT'S LEAD to 6 points, In the last five minutes of the con- test the LIONS GOT HOT and JACK OWEN was the trigger man for 4 quick breaks and this with some good long ones by BOB STORRY saw the LIONS jump into a 63-43 margin at the final whisle JACK OWEN with 24 was top scorer but the big factor for the Lions was that EVERY PLAYER HIT FOR ONE OR MORE. In the second quarter, of thé 11 pts. scored, 'five different players scored two points. PICTON PLAY HERE SATURDAY - NIGHT, at 7:00 pm: sharp, and with the LIONS' ONE ~ GAME OFF SEMI-FINAL INT. "C" "0.A.B.A, PLAY, A good ATTEND- ANCE AT THIS CONTEST IS AS- SURED. PICTON WILL BE A MORE- POWERFUL SQUAD IN PORT PERRY AS THEY ASSURE US THEY HAVE TWO TOP: FOR- WARDS COMING WHO MISSED THE FIRST GAME. : P.P.H.8 has again been INVITED TO THE GOLDEN BALL TOURNA- MENT IN KINGSTON, sponsored by QUEEN'S and in about three weeks we will "know: if our: application is accepted. ; While we have limited our report to the boy's cage interest, we take this 'opportunity of congratulating the Sr. return "game in Port Hope was not without its tense moments, particular- ly when it became evident that the strong Port Hope Junior Team was be- ing defeated by Uxbridge, and many of .those girls would move up to meet our- Seniors, 'Despite this, the snap- py play and tricky manoeuvres of the |- Port Perry team soon gave them a margin on points, which they con-| tinued to widen throughout the game. The tinal score in this game was 30-16 giving Port Perry a totgl lead of 48 points, and winning for them the COSSA championship for the Lake- shore District. Men's Thursday Night League (J: 6. The high point getters for the series were Cornish 61, Doupe 21, James 17, This gives the Bantam "B" COSSA title and they will now meet either the Peterborough Collegiate team or a team from Oshawa Central within the next two weeks. - The Bantams (who are under .16 years) have actually no grading re- garding size of the schools and now having proved themselves the best of have to face teams from cities, Oshawa Truckmen |Quit Bowmanville Following a decision reached-at a 'meeting of club directors recently, Wren Blair, president and spokesman of 'the Oshawa Truckmen Senior "RB" Hockey Club advised that the Truck- men will play no more games at the Bowmanville Arena this season. Keenly disappointed at the lack of patronage received all season long, the situation reached a climax -on Tuesday night when the attendance for the opening game of the playoffs was also far below the support anti= cipated, less 'than' 800 attending, with an advance sale of less than $80 in Oshawa, 'It was at first thought that Truck- men would. move their-home game of Wednesday, March 10, to Kingston Arena declined to go along with this and at yesterday's meeting, the club directors voted to take all remaining "home games" to the opponents' ice. The Oshawa Truckmen may play one or two home games in Belleville, Pre- sident Blair stated. Diabiefes Diabetes has been known to medi- cal science for thousands of years, but only since 1922 have doctors been _able to treat it successfully. The tre- mendous advance was due to the dis- covery of insulin in Toronto by F. G. Bariting in collaboration with J. J. R. McLeod and C. H. Best. The diabetic, who once was doomed "to certain early death, today can live as long=or longer --than the non- diabetic' person. Insulin, a hormone that is extracted } from the glands of slaughtered ani- mals, is vital to the utilization of sugar : by the body. In diabetes the patient's body ean- not produce sufficient quantities of this hormone, with the result that the whole bodily mechanism is thrown wut of kilter. Injections of frisalin 'cor- tect this condition as long as : they : are' continued. z Most cases of diabetes occur : dur ing later life--after the age of 40. One of the most serious complications of diabetes in elderly people is hard- ening of the arteries. This results in a reduced blood supply, especially to the legs and feet, and may pave the way for crippling infections. Recent- ly an English doctor reported that terramycin was successful in treating 70 elderly diabetics suffering from various infections. Of course, there are still advances that can be made and new prepara- ° tions are worked on continuously. A tiew compound of insulin with zinc solution has recently been devised. This produces a high level of blood sugar during the day and a-low level dui hie night and morning, timed to the ..eeds of the patient.
