Down Whithy Panthers 57-51 Griffen Sparks Lions to 8th' Straight" Win * Running into an inspired Whitby quintet, Port Perry Lions were ex- tended to the last few seconds of their Int. 'C' fixture here last night, but came-out on the long end of a 67-51 tally to keep their record unblemished in Int. "C' league play. In a rather rough tussle that was marked by fast play, plucky Jack - Griffen was hot under the basket and rolled up 23 points, as well as turn- ing in a-strong defensive game, and this spelled victory for the Lions. Whitby' 8 best output was by top lea- gue-gcorer Martin Jordan who tallied 018, The game started off with neither. team hitting too 'Well but finally Grif- fen started making his close-in tries and Port enjoyed a 17-12 lead ut|-- quarter time. This they raised to 32- 22 at half. Griffen and Christie led the second quarter drive for the lo- cals while Anderson provided the weak offense of .the visitors. Whitby came up with a strong 3rd frame and cut the margin to 46-89 at the end of this ten minute period. The verdict hung in the balance dur- ing 'the last ten minutes and never but a few points separated the teams. However the Lions failed to panic _and never relinquished _their slight margin. With less than one minute to go, Whitby pulled up within three points but two good foul shots by J. . Waldinsperger and a fast break by Jack Owen assured victory for the home crew. - - = While Warriner hit for 10, guard Johnny Waldinsperger broke up many of Whitby's fast breaks and also counted 10. Mac Christie was strong both ways and chipped in with 8 pts. Geo. Rodd missed the game through illness. Lions play their second last league gane at Bowmanville, next _Thursday * . and should the Port lads come through in this encounter, they have a good chance to niake their league play a clean sweep. In a very fast hard-checking came. Wednesday night, Jan. 12th, Green Shirts and Flyers played an overtime game to a three all tie. be First period opened fast with con- tinual back checking by both sides #nd it was not till 19.10 that Parish let go with a long shot that seemed to hit a bump on the ice and hop over Hawe's stick to make the only counter 'of the game in Collingwood's favor. Port served three penalties to Col- lingwood's one during this period, one | of which Copeland talked into a mis- conduct. In the second period the Flyers after about half the period was over tallied their first on a pass from Romanuk to Copeland. The Flyer's second coun- ter was due to Copeland and when he brought the puck from behind Colling- wood's net and wrapped it around the corner to beat the Goalie, : Second period penalties were many, three to Flyers and six to Collingwood, one of which being a roughing penalty along with O'Connor at 18.04 and when the gong sounded to end the period O'Connor stepped back to open the door of the box to get out which ap- parently was interpreted by Smith as an attack for he let go with a punch to Tommy's jaw. Referee Calhoon gave each a 10 minute misconduct, : Collingwood maneovered the elusive disc into the net first when Parish passed to Taylor at 7.56 and it was not until 11.29 that Chaszeweski made good Attersley's pass out from behind Collingwood's net to tie up again. 10 MINUTE OVERTIME PERIOD The net result'of this perjod (which was compiled of fast-rushes and hard back-checking) - by both teams. Time after time what looked like a sure thing ended | up by being thwarted by the point of a goalie's skate or the tip of a defenceman's stick. Time ran out and the score stayed the same thus each got one point. It | was nice to see the Masters Till-Gib- son line, also Attersley-Fisher Masters Line in their showing some of the more 'experienced Flyer team that 'puck passing and staying out of the penalty 'box are right combinations to get goals, For it was these two lines that showed the better plays of the night. Hearst Faces -- Bankruptcy TORONTO -- A delegation from Hearst in northern Ontario told Pre- mier Frost Tuesday that the area faces economic bankruptcy inless action is taken within a matter of weeks. The delegation, headed by Mayor A. A. Mongeon, told the Premier and other government officals a story of ves | farmers forced to live on a diet of potatoes supplemented by beef from depeleted dairy herds, : The group said the farmers in the area are caught in economic squeeze between decreasing pulpwood quotas and a depressed lumber market. The district's economic collapse began in 1948 when a government quota on the export of pulpwood went into effect. The delegation, which conferred with the premier, Mines Minister Kelly and Deputy Lands and Forests Mini- ster MacDougall, told reporters later that their care had been favourably received.
