Doucett, has an- nounced 'will 'be built soon, it is not likely that any construction will be started this fall, according to a Peter- boro report. Highway engineers 'esti- mate it will take 'a whole season to construet the 16.2-mile.link and the tenders will probably be let, this. Sall so construction can begin early in the spring. The new approved route will run across country from about a half mile north of the present junction of High- ways 28 and 7A to a point on High- way 36, five miles north of Orono, It will intersect Highway 7A at the Cavan railway crossing. OLD ROUTE. The route as first announced was to level Highway 28 at the five mile turn south of Peterboro and intersect Highway 28 about four miles south of Pontypool. There are very few hills along the revised route, as com- pared with the rolling country further north. The purpoge of the new highway linking 'the highways between Lindsay and Newcastle 7 TAN and Port Hope is to drain off some of the traf. fic from Highway 28 which now fun- nels into Highway 2. at Welcome, clogging the one lane bottleneck he- tween Port Hope and Oshawa, The four lane highway is not ex- ended to Newcastle and the last re-|. maining stretch is ready to be paved. | When completed, it is expected that the cut-off will reduce travelling time to and from Toronto and. Peterboro and other points, north and east. It will also reduce traffic conges- tion on the two lane highway be- tween Welcome and Newcastle.and at the same time, motorists will not be required to travel over the equally rough surface of Highway 28 or High- way TA to get to Toronto and points west. : ee tl IN meee FAST PICKUP {Weed of the Week DANDELION, PLANTAIN AND CHICKWEED 'This week our choice for Weed of the Week covers three weeds in place of the usual one. "In giving his rea: sons for grouping them together, K. E. Fallis, Fieldman- for the Crops Branch, Ontario Department of Agri- culture, 'points out that Dandelions, Plantain and Chickweed are all com- monly found growing together in lawns;-and the same control methods apply. : ' ' Fortunately, all three of thege weeds are susceptible to- 2,4-D which can be applied without injuring the rest of the lawn, _ Mr. Fallis states that the Dandelion .can be controlled | by spraying in the spring, just before the blooms appear. However, these weeds are' often inconspicuous at that time and little is done. Once they comé into. bloom they are more ob- vious but spraying at this time--the late bloom stage--give disappointing results. However, there is a second chance for those who did not spray and wish Jthey had or who had poor results. Early autumn spraying of the lawn with 2,4-D gives as good control of Dandelions as the spring "application | and better than mid-summer appli- cations, This" early autdnin spraying also kills the Chickweed and Plantain. Mr. Fallis suggests that a small hand-operated sprayer or a sprinkling can may be used. However, the lat- ter is wasteful and may damage the lawn. 2,4-D applied at the rate of one-third" of an ounce per. thousand square feet of lawn will give good re- sults.. He adds, however, that care should be taken to protect shrubs and other broadleaved plants - from the spray drift. Finally, he recommends that the bare spots caused by the killing of these weeds 'should be fertilized and sown with grass seed. This will give the grass a start for the next year so your lawn will look good 'at that time.
