DEMONSTRATION FARM -On Wednesday, June 25th, 1952, a |: joint meeting of the Beaverton and Scott Calf Clubs was held at Mr, Ray Weldon's farm at Hartley in Victoria County. * The visit was made under the direction of H, L. Fair, Agricul-|' tural Representative, and A. J. Gill, Assistant Representative, for Ontarto County, - This is one of the farms which was taken over by the Ontario Department of Agriculture in co-op- eration with the Ontarig Beef 'Pasture Improvement * Committee. , All these farms have one thing in common-- they were not pasturing 'as many cat- | tle as they should considering the fact -| that they_ all had reasonably good soil and were fairly well drained. It was felt: that this demonstration was of vital interest to all club membeérs and parents. : Mr. Ed. Starr, Provincial - Live- stock Fieldman, who has been respon- gible for much of the work in connéc- tion-with this project was present to show the members around the farm and to explain the layout and ideas involved. The farm which is about 190 acres --fin-extent has been in sod for approx- : imately 40 years. . It was divided in- to 3 plots of around 43 acres each. The centre plot had no treatment ap- plied whatever. The - plot . to the south was ploughed up, fertilized and rescetled with a cover crop of oats. type generally. recommended® Tor long term pasture and consisted of the fol-. lowing: AMalfa--5 1bs. The onts were pastured off 'just as they were coming into head. The plot to the north was fentilized-only--no cultivations applied whatever. J The results to date are of an.inter- im nature as this is a relatively long term experiment. The carrying cap- acity of the farm has been stepped up enormously and there. nye now as many cattle on the plot which was broken up and reseeded as the whole farm used to carry. To date there are 24 head-in the fertilized rseeeded plot, 10 cattle on the check and 14 cattle on the fertilized plot. ~The to- . _| tal weights up_to June 18, 1952, 'are '| as follows: + Reseeded t--12 cattle put on ay 8th cattle put on May 23rd Total gain to June 18th-- 2610 lbs.
