PORT PERRY, ONTARIO, THURSDAY, JUNE 6th, 1952 "GREEN PROMISE" Tells Great Story of Grass Leaders in grassland farming, and many grassland farmers, themselves. appear in the new full-color sound motion picture, "Green Promise." which has just been released for public showing. This half-hour film tells the story of the amazing benefits of modern grassland farming. In the film are the men shown at top of the above picture. Left to right are: Dz, Henry L. Ahlgren. head of agronomy at the University of Wisconsin; Prof. Carl Ben- der, a founder of the Joint Committee on Grassland Farming, and Dz, Hugh Bennelt, universally known as the futher of modern -soll conservation. Lower view shows one of the grassland farms used in the making of the Him, which can be scheduled for local showing through local New Holland equipment dealers. Mrs. A, Bailey donated the money forthe badges won by the G, A. girls. Mrs, Langfeld, Mra. George Forder and Miss G. McGee offered to supply table linen, + Mrs. Nicholson: and Mrs. W. Thompson is now in a rest home in Port Perry after an opera- tion in Oshawa Hospital. - Sorry to report that Ray Snooks is in Sunnybrook: hospital. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. ; Lloyd Wright (Thelma Ferguson) on the birth of their son. Several from here attended the sale of Ray McGill Mr. and Mrs, McGill sold their farm to Mr. M. Gray and moving to Blackstock where they haged the house recently owned by Mrs. L .Mountjoy. We hope that Mrs: G. Marlow, who is in Bowmanville hospital, will soon be well enough to return to her home. A number of W. I. members from Nestleton and Blackstock : branches attended the D. A. convention held in Tyrone United Church, May 27. Mrs. M. Emerson is District President. for. another year. There was a splendid display of Hobby Wovk: «Mrs. Foster Ferguson, Federated Representative, gave an address and Mrs, Nora Creyke of the Dept. of Agriculture, explained} the new set-up--"Extension Services for the Homemaker". The highlight of the programme was, an address by Dr. T. Allen Sweet, Psychiatric Spe- cialist from Ont.. Hospital, Whitby. . Maple Grove won the prize for the "| Tyrone "branch for "Power Commission and the Township 'proposed-new four room' school with "Best 'Diptrict Program". . Mrs. Rahm moved a vote of thanks to the being hosts for the day. W. A. of United Church held May meeting at home of Mrs. 0. Graham and Mrs. R. Duff. Devotional was taken by Mrs. H. Reeve in chair. met on June embers all present, A large delegation: from Caesarea was present to express their opinion regarding the proposed Street Lights at Caesarea, hoth sides being well re- presented and expressed their opinion quite freely. The Reeve told them that as this was a Democratic Country it was quite within their rights to ex- press their viewpoint, but the Council was proceeding according to the pro- visions of the Power Commission Act and there was nothing else the Council could do. The Council had discussed it with representatives of the Hydro Solicitor, and intended to proceed ac- cording to the Regulations. The Board of Education, Cartwright Area was present and discussed the the :Council; setting "out the reasons for building a new school from. the various angles and requested the Council to proceed to pass a By-Law to issue 20 year Debentures for. $80,- 000 at a suggested 414 %. The Chajrman of the Board pointed out that at the present. Assessment this would mean a Tax levy of $3.33 on the $1000 of Assessment. The Junior Girls * Choir of Port Perry United Church, under the direction of Mrs. J. Jobson, will supply the special music. 'Ashburn Sunday School and Church Services were held in Burn's Church on Sunday June 1st at 10.30 a.m. and 7.80 p.m. Rev. J. Riddell was in charge of the evening service and chose for his text--Acts, chapter 16, verse 28 "Bat Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, do Thyself no Harm: for we are all here". During the service the choir sang 'Master, the Tempest is Raging.' Despite somewhat inclement weather a large audience assembled in Burn's Church on the evening of May 20th for a-special meeting of the W.M.S. Hymn 391 opened the service fol- lowed by prayer, from May Glad Tid- ings, by Mrs. A. Dean. Mrs, R. Bat- ten read the- Scripture lesson from Is. Chapter 61, response from a large number of our branch, and, we were delighted to wel- come a good representation from. Myr- tle, Oshawa and Port Perry. We were favoured with a duet beautifully rendered by Mrs. R, Up- ham and Doris Heron. Our guest speaker--Miss Margaret McKenzie--outward bound for Form- osa as an evangelistic Missionary was then introduced. She told us of the work at Syndale House, Montreal, with its many acti- vities, home crafts, cooking, sewing, manual training and camps for girls from "8 to 80". Then she gave us a vision of her future field of endeavor --Formosa, where she and Misa Greer will have as their apecial interest the training of kindergarten teachers; from among the pupils of Tamsul Girls School, to work in surrounding villages, 2 Mrs. 'M. Sparks thanked Miss Me- Kenzie for her very enlightening ad- dress, following which: Mrs. G. Fisher on behalf of the Home Helpers Dept. presented our Missionary with two flannelgraphs on the Life of Christ. Collection amounted to $26.26. Rev. Mr. Riddell closed the meeting with the henediction, after which light re- freshments were served in the base- ment. Mr. and Mrs. Wes. Routley and Hel- en spent Sunday with Mr, and Mus. Earl Risebrough, of Markham. Miss Ruth Richardson, of Toronto spent a couple of days last week with her parents Mr. and Mrs. R. Richard- son, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Arnold of Scugog and Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Gardhouse of Malton were Sunday visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs .Nelson Ashton, Mrs. -J. Miss Ruecraft hunded in her ve- signation as Church Decorator, and the monthly group of the W.A. are to take charge of same. At the close of the meeting a dainty lunch was served by the group in charge, and a pleasant and profitable afternoon spent.
