After the {score cards were called, the high lady count was gained by Mrs. E. Holtby, who received half a dozen custard cups. Miss Wilma Cochrane (filling in as a man) received lotions for high count. During intermission Mr, Les Smith introduced detailed outlines re- garding "Ontario County Co-Operative Medical Service". As a result many questions were keenly discussed. At the conclusion a liberal lunch was served plus many cups of tea per per- son. Majority vote showed a desire for one more euchie in two weeks. Last Friday night Cedar Creek school again welcomed many euchre spirited folk who assembled for cards and sociability combined. Near mid- night Messrs. J, Greenwood and J. Wilson drew the tallies for the prizes. High score for lady was awarded to Mrs. Wm. Blain who received a vase. Mr. L. Devitt was holder of men's high count and he is richer by a linen hand- kerchief. Mrs. L. Beacock and Mr. R. Blain won consolations of ice box con- tainer and tie clip. The evening being of a chilly nature the hot. cups of coffee and unrationed lunch proved "just the berries." A surplus of cake was then auctioned; this contribution was added-to the evening's proceeds. Don't forget the W. A. next Wed- | nesday afternoon at the school. In those days she was known as Mary Campbell and appeared on CBC networks with Win- nipeg orchestras conducted by Geof- frey Waddington and Roy Locksley. HAZARD TO HUMAN LIFE IS FOUND IN GROWING USE OF INSECTICIDES (Excerpt from article in Saturday Night by John J. O'Neill) ® A boy once threw a stone through a hornets' nest, and with that same shot knocked every apple off the trees throughout the township the following season, The dispossessed hornets dis- turbed other insects, which in turn dis- turbed others in a series of unfavor- able events, and as a result the fruit- tree blossoms over a wide area were not fertilized and the trees bore no fruit, This was a favorite story of the former state epidemiologist, Dr. Frank Overton, to illustrate the fact that apparently slight disturbances of the equilibrium 'that exists in nature can lead to widespread disastrous results. On the eastern end of Long Island, Alfred Brown, a public lands warden, is. leading a fight of several hundred residents, organized in conservation clubs, against the disappearance of fishrand game in that area, which they charge is caused by highly poisonous |- insecticides used by farmers, One of their complaints is the re- duced yield -of fruit 'in orchards be- cause the bees which fertilize the blas- soms have been killed by the poisons used to rid farms of harmful insects. The next step in such a series of de- velopments would be to have the farm crops disappear through' failure of pollenization, leaving no crops to pro- tect against insects, thus completing a vicious circle. } Penetrate Fruit. They are very successful in killing pest insects, but they are so powerful that it is diffi- cult to limit their effects to the in- sects for the eradication of which they are used. Some of them, penetrate into 'fruit, where they cannot be washed off, and constitute a hazard to human life, Not only are the insecticides used several Federal departments to learn the balancing benefits and dangers in- a volved in use of the various insecti- Eo) cides and particularly their effect on human and animal life. Dr. Arnold J. Lehman, of the Food 4 and Drug Administration, Washington Sl recently reviewed at the New York - Academy of Medicine the effects ob- served on experimental animals given by individual farmers throughout the country, but a recent report shows that more than 2000 communitids un- dertook insect eradication campaigns covering wide areas during the last war, Soo 3 Investigations aré undér way in various amounts of the insect poisons. The fatal effect of large doses on the animals will give clues to the nature if illnesses caused by lesser amounts which human beings may take un- knowingly in contaminated water or foods, or by contact. __hew, 10 profect it agolnst the weather.
