THE BELL TELEPHONES COMPANY OF CANADA ) Rowe, Fatally Mrs. M. of Manchester, Burned Coal Oil Explodes when Poured Into Stove in Kitchen. (Times-Gazette) " Mrs. Marilla Rowe, 35, of Man- chester, died in the Oshawa Hospital early on Wednesday morning from first degree burns sustained in her home the day before when coal oil she was using to speed up the fire in the stove exploded. Following the explosion, Mrs. Rowe's hair was enveloped in flames. Her sister Miss Mina Smith, of Birming- ham, N.Y., who was visiting her, acted promptly and dashed into the kitchen and put out the flames. In doing so she suffered second degree burns which Dr. G. M. Rennie treated. "Her prompt action prevented the fire from spreading to the house furnishings," commented Dr. Rennie, in voicing high praise of Miss Smith's resourcefulness, Mrs. Rowe was rushed to the hos- pital but her condition, which was de-|. scribed by Dr. Rennie as 'extremely critical", failed to respond to treat- ment. : Harvey Rowe, husband of the de- ceased, who was working in Toronto, was notified shortly after the accident and rushed to Manchester to join his two children, Marlene, 13, and Douglas 12, The family moved to Manchester from Toronto last December and plan- ned to start a tourist business this spring. The funeral will be at Brampton. Dr, Rennie thought it unlikely that an inquest would be held. March 17, 18, SEED FAIR, BACON DOOR PRIZES.
