LJ i >So» on BROOKLIN A service of special interest was held at_St. Thomas Church, Brooklin, last Sunday morning; when the white Naval Ensign : of H.M.C.S. Rayon D'or, presented to the Church by Lieut. Harry Lade, R.C.N.C. (in per- son), was dedicated by the Rector. Lieut... Lade is the Commanding Officer of the Rayon D'or, a mine sweeper of the Atlantic coast. He has four brothers in the Armed Forces. Mrs. Lade, Sr., and her son Pte, Stan- ley Lade, were among those present at the service. An appropriate ad- dfess was given in which the Rector spoke of the heroism of seamen and their service to all freedom loving people. ; The White Naval Ensign is next only to the Royal Standard; it is a battle flag, and: all 'other ships must dip their flags to the White Ensign which is flown only by commissioned ships. The Ensign is composed of the Red Cross of St. George on a white ground, and a small Union Jack in the top inside corner. The Ensign in the picturesque, vil- lage church will serve as a symbol to inspire to high adventure, self-forget- fulness and brave service. MR. HARRY BROOKS SUCCEEDS When Mr. Gordon Hern, of Toronto, was in Port Perry, at the time of 'the death of his father, Mr. Thomas Hern, he visited the Star Office, and the talk naturally drifted to old times, and the chums of his boyhood days. Among those specially mentioned It does not seem so many years ago since Harry was one of the boys around Port Perry. He was a quiet, almost shy, young fellow. - But he knew what he was doing, and could be relied on t¢ carry out any work he undertook. There was no fanfare of trumpets when he went to Lindsay and then to Toronto; but we heard about him from time to time, always some Item Harry started by measuring rails and Zehetking ties in the Lindsay dis- trict. Now he sits at a fine flat topped' desk in one of the beautifully fitted offices of the C.P.R. building at Mon- treal. That desk is equipped with a battery of push buttons. He is Sup- erintendent of the Eastern lines of the Canadian Pacific Railway. If you are a stranger, it will not be easy to secure an interview, but Port Perry is a magic name, and if you hail from that noted village, you can be sure of a hearty welcome from Mr. Harry Brooks. Myrtle Station The annual pancake supper on Wed- nesday evening of last week was the usual success, although the number present was not as large as in other years, Many employees of the De- fence Industries Limited, were on the night shift and some others of pancake cating fame, were unable to be pre- sent. However, the 'cooks in the kit- chen had a busy time trying to keep enough of the éakes on hand for the waiters who were continually return- ing for fresh supplies to replenish the dishes which were constantly running low of the favorite delicacy. After everyone declared they "simply could not eat another one", Mr. Frank Mit- chell of Whitby, representing the Rob- lin Creamery, showed by moving pic- tures, the interesting process of mak- ing butter. The visit in 1939 of our King and Queen was also shown and a reel of a funny episode created a 'deal-of merriment, The last reel to 'be shown was in colors, showing hun- ters leaving for camp, the arrival at the log' ¢abins at their destination, the trip' down "a river by canoe, the tro- phies, ete. "At the close, a hearty vote of thanks was tendered Mr. Mitchell and the*National Anthem brought the pleasant entertdinment to an end.
