EO an Lo Se Ba Ontario's First Birds Arriving Horned Larks Reach Here From Southern Winter Home Before Either Robins or the Swallows The earliest spring migrants to arrive in Ontario and Quebec are not the Robins <or the Swallows, but small birds of the highways and open fields called Horned Larks. No matter how show-cov ered and wintry the country land- scape, -these hardy birds usually appear as far north as Ottawa and Montreal before the end of Feb. rurary. This year they have once more arrived on schedule time and are enlivening the country. side with their cheerful twitter- ings. They are close relatives of that famous songster, the Euro- pean Skylark. At a little distance they appear dull brown and quite inconspicuous, but at close range one cen readily see that their fac es are vividly marked with black, white and yellow. They do not, of course, have true horns, like those of a cow or a deer, but each lark has {wo prominent tufts of feath- ers, one on cach side of the top of its head, that look like stubby horns and have given rise to the common name, APRIL BUSY. MONTH As March proceeded, other kinds of birds, such as the Crow, Rob- in, DRluebird, Blackbird, Killdeer, Canada Goose, and various wild ducks pushed northward into Can- ada, despite the ice and snow. With April clearing the fields and lakes, feathered travellers are re- turning in greater numbers, and when May opens the buds and decks the world in f lowers and - leaves, a great company of song birds will arrive at just the right time to attack: the many insect pests as they begin to stir and buzz about. 1 Yellow Iodine Makes Whites Scientist Says Lack of It Is Chief Attribute of Yellow Race Jodine like that you put on a cut may represent the chief difference between the Mongolian and Caucas- jan races, in the opinion of Dr. Ivor Griffith, dean of the Philadelphia Colege of Pharmacy and Sclence.
