The men are requested to come to the church Friday night to prepare for this. ; Sunday School and Bible Class will be at the regular hour. Mr. C. Clark, the Temperance Supt. gave a good talk on that subject at S. S. on Sun. day. : \ Quite a number attended the League last Wednesday night. The President, Miss Laird, was in charge of the meeting, the last one before Christmas. Miss Myrtle Bond read a Christmas Bible reading, Miss L. Murphy had charge of the program which consisted of a girls' chorus, "Noel" and a most interesting talk by Miss Laird on her visit to Japan, which was enjoyed immensely. Many Christmas hymns were sung. « = - " Ralph Lyle, of Toronto, was in the village on Sunday. Miss Helen Butson is recovering from a tonsil operation. Mr. and Mrs. E; Philp were in Bow- ~ manville seeing friends on Thursday. Several from here atended the High -.S¢hool: Commencemént Exercises on Thursday and Friday nights, ' Mr. and Mrs. S. Hope were in New- market on Wednesday. ey Miss S. Tewkesbury and Mr. and Mrs.. A, McGregor, were in Toroptu one day last week. Mrs. F. Stanton, of Brooklin, spent a few days with her mother Mrs. R. Bond, last week. SCUGOG _. The Sunday: School of the Foot * Church will hold their annual Christ- * mas Tree on Friday. evening, Dec. 20. A most interesting program is being prepared and a cordial invitation 1s extended toall. On Sunday evening, Dec. 22nd, a Sacred Christmas concert will / be given in the Centre Church, including a dramatic presentation of the Christ- mas message. This uniqhe service promises to be one of special interedt and all will be heartily welcome. Col- lection in aid of Sunday School. The Christmas Tree entertainment at the Head Church will be under the auspices of the Community Club. A delightful program is being prepared which will appeal to everyone. Ad- mission 26¢ and 10c. Everybody is very busy getting their fowl ready for the Port Perry . Christmas Fair and market, and Christmas is coming very near. The correspondent takes this opportunity to thank everyone who has in any way helped with the work, and wishes one and all a very Merry Christmas and Prosperous 1936. Of course this -- includes the Editor and staff. The Women's' Association held their December meeting last Tuesday after- noon at the home of Mr, and Mrs, C. Hardy, who had decorated their home for the occasion with everygreens and icicles. The' meeting opened by the singing of a Christmas hymn. The Scripture lesson was read by Mrs. G. Jackson, Business was then discus- sed, among which was the sale of two very pretty quilts. It was decided for each member to try and find a buyer for them. One {6a pink dahlia pattern, the other a Dresden plate, 'The surprise box money was counted which amounted to $7.39. The holi- day calendars were not all in, but it is hoped they will all be in by the next meeting. The officers were all re-elected except the president, Mrs. O. Jeffrey. Mrs. R. Carter was nominated to take her place. Rev, Mr. Joblin gave us all encouragement in: our work and closed the meeting with the Benediction. Then all were invited to the dining room where 40 71 always of a warm welcome on the .C. L. Fralick on Sunday. one of the Centre--Mrs, A. Clark, Mrs. F. Crozier, Mrs. W. Jeffrey and Mrs. C. Hardy. Mrs. C. L. Fralick and Mrs. R. Hood were appointed the program committee for the next meeting. * Mrs. C. Samells and little Helen visied Mrs. Geo. Samells on Monday. Scugog Hall, on Tuesday evening, December 10th, was the scene of an interesting event, when about 126 friends gathered to celebrate the re- cent marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Lane, of Nestleton, in the form of a miscellaneous shower. Dancing was indulged in till 11 o'clock, then Mr. R. Hood called. on George and Tressa to come to the platform where they were well showered with confetti by Mrs.! S. Rodman, Mrs. Burnham and Mrs. Frank Bailey. Mr. Hood then read an address expressing the best wishes of Scugog friends and assuring them Island. At the proper time a huge packing box filled with gifts was placed before the bride and groom by Mr. Allie Mark and Gordon Jeffrey and the gifts were unwrapped. Mrs.| T. Redman read the verses giving George some humorous advice. Mr. and Mrs. Lane expressed their appre- ciation, then all joined in singing, "For they are jolly good fellows". Lunch closed a very happy event. A very large owl measuring four feet, seven inches from tip to tip of wings, was recently trapped by Leonard Hope by placing the trap on top of a high post. This owl had been very troublesome this fall by taking turkeys, ducks and chickens. Mr. and Mrs. A. Prentice and fam- ily were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Mrs. Geo. Sweetman, Mrs. R. D. Devitt were in Janetville one evening last week when a branch of eighteen was organized there. Lunch was served at the close. Miss Irene Graham, of Toronto, was with her uncle and aunt Mr. and Mrs. John Larmer, over the week end. Rev. H. J. Bell took the worship part of the League meeting last week. Miss Vivian Saddler was in' charge of the program and the fol- lowing numbers were given: duet by 'Misses Pearl and Dorothy Wright, "Silent Night"; reading by Miss M. Mountjoy, "Christmas Bells"; a solo by Miss Pauline Ferguson, an instru- mental by Miss Pearl Wright, and community singing of carols, The topic "Christmas Carols" was taken by Miss Vivian Saddler. be Rev. C. C. Harcourt. Special music will be furnished by the choir. Owing to this service there will be no even- ing service in St. John's Church. On Wednesday evening, December 26th, under the auspices of the United Church, a program by local talent will be put on in the Commun- ity Hall. A meeting in the interests of organ- ism was held in the community hall on Tuesday evening of last week. The speakers were Mr. H. Graham, of Kingston, Grand Organizer of Ontario East, Mr. F. Bowen, of Orono, Rev. H. J. Bell and Rev. C. C. Harcourt. The last two speakers chose for their subjects "Intolerance, Suppression and Superstition" and "Mixed Mar- riages" respectively, while Mr. Gra- ham included -in his address '"Sepa- rate Schools". Mr. Herb. Hooey, County Master, acted as chairman, The regular monthly meeting of 'the A. Y. P. A. of St. John's Church, was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Bailey on Wednesday evening, Dec. 11th. The meeting opened with a Christmas hymn, 'Scripture reading by Rev. C. C. Harcourt and prayers by the President. After the business session the following program in charge of Mrs. F. Hamilton, was given as follows: a reading by Mrs. R. Archer, "Christmas in Australia", a talk by Rev. C. C. Harcourt on "Some of my Christmases"; a read- ing by Mrs. T. Smith "People who helped make Christmas Customs"; a reading by Mrs. W. Crawford, "The Christmas Spirit"; community singing and a contest for which prizes were given and which were won by Mrs. | (Rev.) Harcourt and Miss Florrie Parr, Lunch was served by the group in charge. A hearty vote of thanks was tendered Mr, and Mrs. Bailey for the use of their home apd the meeting closed with the A. Y. P. A. motto and Auld Lang Syne. Mrs. T. Brown of Bowmanville, has returned home aftr a visit with her daughter Mrs. A. Rahm. The members of the, young ladies' class of the United Church met in the basement of the church 'orf Wednesday, - afternoon and quilted a nice quilt which will be included in the church bale. A Pot Luck Supper was held and the following officers elected for the coming year: President, Pauline Ferguson, Vice-President, Olive Van- Camp, _Sec'y-Treas., Aileen Mountjoy, Asst,, Gertrude Henry; Teacher, Mrs. (Rev.) Bell; Asst, Mrs.*E. Dorrell. The annual meeting of the W.M.S. of the United Church was held at the home of Mrs. John Larmer on Wed- nesday afternoon, Dec. 11. The de- votional exercises were taken by¢Mrs. (Rev.) Bell. Mrs. Jabez Wright was in charge of the following program-- a solo by Miss Beryl Larmer, "Hung Up the Baby's Stocking", a chapter of the 'Study Book .by Mrs. Foster Ferguson, and a reading by Mrs. J. -Wright, "Africa". Rev. H. J. Bell presided during the election of officers which resultéd as follows: Hon. Presi- dents, Mrs. Jas. Byers, Mrs. Jas. Mar- low, Mrs. D. Galbraith and Mrs. A. Werry; President, Mrs. (Rev.) Bel; 1st Vice, Mrs. Jabez Wright; 2nd Vice, Mrs. E. Dorrell; Sec., Mrs. C¢ Hill, Cor. Sc., Mrs. Roy Taylor; Treas. 'Mrs. F. Stinson. Lunch was served by the group in charge. On Thursday evening, Dec. 12th, Mr. and Mrs. E. Darcy were. host and hostess at a fowl supper in honour of the 26th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Argue. The happy couple were presented with a beauti- ful Silver Tea Service and other gifts. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. R. Spinks, Mr. T. McLaughlin, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Argue, Miss Marion Argue, Mr. and Mrs. C. Hyde, Rev. and Mrs. ° C. C. Harcourt, Mr. and Mrs, Willan.
