M. S. BANQUET A very successful W. M. S. banquet was held in the United Church S. S. rooms last Wednesday evening, Nov. 14th. The ladies of the United Church came in large numbers and enjoyed the simple but delightful supper prepared for them by the various groups of the W. M. S. and of the evening Auxiliary. The needs of the mind and spirit were then provided for by the pro- gram which followed. A hymn was sung, and brief ad- dresses were given by Mrs, Farmer, President of the W.M.S. and by Miss G. Stovin, President of the Evening Auxiliary. This group of young women are enthusiastic workers and their numbers are being steadily in- creased, ~ Mrs. D. Carnegie and Mrs. H. W. Emmerson then rendered a pleasing duet, accompanied by Mrs. Ted Jack- son. ~The guest speaker of the even- ing, Miss Mitchell, was then intro- duced. Miss Mitchell has spent the last thirty years travelling all over Canada visiting and encouraging Home Mis- sion stations. From the stories of ex- perience thus acquired and aided by a wonderful' memory, she gave vivid word pictures of conditions as 'she found them; from Newfoundland and Nova Scotia 'to British: Columbia and the Peace River. All listened with rapt attention and felt that W.M.S. work was indeed worth while. A vote of thanks was tendered Miss Mitchell for her very interesting address. THORNTON A large audience attended the ser- vice in the United Church on Sunday evening when Rev. Dr. Thornton spoke. His sermon gave a clear idea of the types of "religion" that become the motive power in the lives of men. Archer Motor Sales, of Port Perry, treated the people of this community to a free program of pictures, dance, and music. At 4.30 the school children were shown a series of General Motors Talking Pictures on car pro- duction, ete., and two Mickey Mouse Cemedies. At 6.30 a banquet tendered to the officials of General Motors and other companies where Archer Motor Sales do business, was given at the Sebert House. About 40 guests were treated to a duck dinner. Among those pre- sent were W. M. Letcher, reeve; E. Hayes, Manager of the Bank of Com- ymerce, R. D, Kirby, D. M. Harris, "of General Motors; Horace Wilkes, of Gutta Percha Rubber Co., M. Houslow of Exide Battery Co ris, of Canadian Oil Company. At 8.30 the series of pictures were shown in the garage and at 9.30 the dance was 'started. A lucky number prize draw was made at 11, the winners were: 1st Mrs. Jack Dowson, $100 credit note; 2nd J. Coombs, a car heater; 3rd Mrs. M. Letcher, a tire; 4th Jack Smith, car battery; 5 M. Gilroy, oil change; Gth F. Arnold, 3 greasings.
