During the course of his lecture Mr. McInnes called the attention of the audience to the close relationship of music with every day-life. - Illus- trating his statement on the piano, he showed how the simple actions and sounds such as walking, the call (dis- ~cordant though it is) of a newsboy, one's telephone number and many other familiar things are used by the artist to compose his most beautiful pieces. The test of oti music is the number of times it can be repeated without tiring the listeners. Clas- gical music is that which has out- lived its age--that is music which can bear constant repetition. In this connection, Mr. McInnes said that it had been proved that small children invariably chose good music in pre- ference of poor music, Mr. McInnes, contends that music should be emphasized. more than it is in English-speaking countries and especially in Canada, pointing out that it is the means of binding to- " gether the traditions of the different - nationalities and fusing them into a united whole. At the 'close of the lecture the audience was given the privilege of asking questions. One of which was to explain the relationship of music to national life and war. Mr, McInnes answered that music can be degraded fer- spetifiesgs '1988. ! Auch a8 inflaming the hearts of the "people to hatred and war. At this point Mr. McInnes mentioned that the Russian and Italian Governments claim the free- dom of music and art from such con- trol as one of the justifications for their form of Government. Music and art have been made free to the people in these countries, and Mos- cow has the greiitest opera in the world. In France, Russia and Italy, the opera is controlled by the state and the best music costs the people less than the poorer quality--a com- plete reversal of conditions in Amer- lea. "The meeting was brought to a close with a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. McInnes. "We pay the TOP PRICE for all kinds of Fowl, Wool, Goose Feathers, Horse Hair, Hides, and Farm Produce.
