OSHAWA, ONTARIO, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1922 © PAGE FIVE orld ey Team Likely i This Season Several New Plover sor Othe As Well As Other District Towns ll JHow does the hockey situation look in Oshawa this year Accord- ing to the enthusiastic followers of the winter's most popular pastime, Oshawa will be back stronger than ever in O.H.A, circles, both in jun- for and intermediate series. Last year the intermediates made a cred- itable showing but there was very little material from which to select a first class sexette, However, this year it is expected there will be a larger number of players turn out when the time comes, During the last two seasons keen rivalry has sprung up between Osh- awa and Port Hope, the latter team eliminating the locals on both oc: | easlons. Port Hope will present a stronger lme-up than usual owing one or two Belleville players and other newcomers, Tho Oshawa team will also trot out gme or two new ones. Sammy Lowe, who starred at left for Port Hope, is back in Osh- awa again ready to answer the call while Wildbur, the star of last year's Cobourg juniors, is eligible for in- termediate company, Another merly of Campbeliford. ers, all of whom are valuable jnen, last year. With such prospects ahead the 'present time, It is understood come the as there has been in the past. Practically every team than has beem seen for several years, Whitby used a. number of juniors last year, who showed a world of speed but the lack of expe- rience prevented them from figuring in the district title. They may be counted upon to have an aggrega- tion worth while, Bowmanville are out for the group championship, being able to draw from lgst year's jublors and Lloyd Chambers, a member of the Lind- say Midgets for two or three years, who pitphes for 'the Hosiery Town's Central gue ball team, will be a tower of strength to their roster. Altogether the teams which will compete in this seetion will be so much stronger that the winners will have to fight every inch of the way. Oshawa has boasted of having teams of championship calibre and on several occasions the Ontario honors have been fost by the narrow- est of margins. While a champion ship is not everything, it is the de- sire of every team to gain such a dis tinetion and local fansiyare hoping to see an Oshawa sexeite go a long way in the race for the O.H.A. title. Whitby Amateu Elects New 'Officers The fourth annual meeting of the Whitby Amateur Athletic Associa- tion was held Wednesday evening when officers were elected for the ensuing year and the future policy of the Association decided. The mew officers are: . Honorary Presidents--Col. J. E. Farewell, K.C., Fred Hatch, Sheriff Paxton, and F. D. Maundrell. President--J. M. Hicks. Vice-President--Francis McIntyre. Secretary--H. L. Taylor. Treasurer--G. P. Lynd. Asst. Treas.--E. M. Brown. It was decided that the association should continue its activities in con- nection with the minstrel show. The same committee as last year (with one or two changes) was re-appoint- ed for this season, and it was em- powered to make all dates and neces- sary arrangements for the show. It is expected that Messrs. G. P. Lynd and J. M. Short will again take con- trol this year. The association de- creed that anyone taking part in any of the association's activities must be a member of the W.A A A. The To- ronto Telegram last night sizes up the T.A.B.A. champions' prospects as follows: "Hillcrests go to Pefer- boro tomorrow and Manager "Nip"' Dwan and the entire team are con- fident of handing Belleville a beat- ing and thus stepping into the Oun- tario senior final against Galt, Hill crests have the edge tomorrow if there is any. This Indian lad, Wil- liams, had a hard nine innings on Wednesday, and if he subdues the Toronto champions tomorrow must be 'credited as a real iron man, On the other hand, Ed, Scott will he fresh to step in there, the two in- nings he pitched at Bolleville doing no harm, And with Art. Lancaster back at second---or perhaps third-- the Hillcrest infield will be stronger, Batstone, of course, will be playing Rughy with Queen's, and Conacher will be with Argos. Manager Dwan may send Lancaster tc third, Lang to second and Bert Irwin to the out- field. The team will go down tomor- row morning and will be accompa- nied by a crowd of supporters." The "carnage" talk of Toronto sport sheets and the refer- ence to the Trunks as weaklings at the bat, and "deceivers'" began to grate upon the sensitive mind of the locals, and they took it out of "Nip" Dwan's pets Wednesday, and now feel square with the old world again. Belleville ©Ontario:--Athol Gow, sporting writer of the Toronto Daily Star had to admit that Williams is a lovely pitcher. And Jackie has turned in better games than Wed- nesday this season. Oh, boy! when those three runs were hung up in the seventh and four more in the eighth, it set the fans to howling. It sure was a grand and glorious feeling. Peeney Mills' mighty swat to the score board would have been good for a circuit had not ground rules been necessary. Close to four thousand fans filled the bleachers, grand stand and completely encirel ed the out-field. Port Hope Gaide:--Death land taxes are sure. According to the late Sir John McDonald, the two un- certainties were a horse race and an election, but after Wednesday's game at Belleville, we insist upon adding baseball to the latter cate- gory. Last Saturday at Toronto the Hillcrests simply played tag with Belleville and scored almost at will. The final tally was 18 to 2 and no person expected that Belleville had the slightest chamce of victory at their home grounds. But big chief Williams gathered in the scalps, Wednesday afternoon and sent Hill- crests home with the short end of the score, despite the best efforts of the wistors' two pitchers, Lancaster and Scott. Eatries have closed for the inter- scholastic series of the O.R.F.U. Convenors have been appointed and requested to hold meetings to draw up the schedules. The local group will be compesed of Belleville C.I., Lindsay C.I., Oshawa High School and Peterboro C.I. The convenor is J. G. Althouse of Oshawa. Peterboro Examiner:--The big- gest diamond battle of the year will be staged at Riverside Park this af- ternoon when the famous Toronto Hillcpests will clash with Belleville in the third game of the series, with the Central Ontario League winners. Belleville after losing the first game 18 to 2, turned the tables on the Hillcrests winning 9-8. Peterbor- Wireless Quickly Brings Scores of The World's Series Through the courtesy of Mr, Char- les Bowra, of the Electric Shop, Sim- coe Street North, The Reformer has been enabled to give the, complete scores of the world's series baseball games to date between the New York Giants and Yankees. In Thursday's edition of The Reformer, the story of the game up to the end of the fifth innings together with the final result, appeared on the front page, it having been received by radio di- rect from Buffalo. This service was much appreciated by Reformer read- ers as the paper carried an account of the game and was on the street by five o'clock, twe hours ahead of the Toronto papers. Yesterday the scores were bullet- ined at the end of every innings and the final score was received at four o'clock, This service will be continued until the conclusion of the series while the Belleville-Hillcrest results will be bulletined regularly, a special service having been arrang- ed. The interest shown in the Belle- ville Hillcrest play-off and the world's series has been intense, large num- bers watching the scores as they were marked on the bulletin board while hundreds of telephone calls have heen received. Baseball is certainly living up to its reputation of being the most popular summer sport in America, Intermediate Ball og oye League a Possibility It is possible that next year an In- termediate Baseball League affiliated Ontario Ladies' Basketball Ass'n Is Again Active Suggested That Oshawa Should Enter a Team This Winter The Ladies' Ontario Basketball Association, which was organized two years ago, is at the threshold of its third season and, with the hopes of broadening out hy adding more teams and districts throughout the province, President Carrie M. Blackwell is seeking co-operation of prospective teams, Oshawa has never heen represent- ed by a ladies' team in any Provin- cial 'association and a good: oppor- tunity is being presented by the L. 0.B.A., in inviting teams from all sections of the Province to enter. Peterboro and several other cities have done so and Oshawa could fol- low in their step. Four teams comprised the asso- ciation in its first year. One team represented Hamilton, one Toronto and the same at Stratford and London and twice that number were affiliated last season, - Two groups were formed, consisting of the eastern district, with . Peter boro, Toronto, St. Catharines and Guelph affiliated. The western group included teams from Strat- ford, Woodstock, St. Thomas and London, Toronto and London Shamrocks, group winners, met in the finals and the Shamrocks won the cham- pionship for the second consecn- with the O.B.A.A., may be organized in this district in which Orono, Bow- manville, Whitby and Oshawa would be represented. The question of in- termediate baseball has been suggest- ed before but it is more than likely | that steps will be taken soon to or- ganize a league. Intermediate base ball would be a valuable feeder for | the Central Ontario League and | would tend to raise the standard of | baseball in this district. While Or- ono and Whithy cannot turn out teams of senior calibre, they lave lots of material for an intermediate | series. | District Tankard Games To Be Played Here This Season Ontario Tankard and District Cup competition groupings for the 1922- | 23 season have been announced by Secretary G. 8. Pearcy of the Ontario Curling Association. There are six-| teem Tankard and twelve District Cup groups. In the Tankard series, Oshawa is in group No. 2 with Cobourg, Col-| borne and Port Hope and will play | in Oshawa. The umpire will be T. H. McMurty, Oshawa. In the Dis- trict Cup competition Oshawa is in group No. 3 with Belleville, Camp- beliford, Cobourg, Colborne, Picton | and Port Hope. The games will be played at Cobourg and the »mpire will be J. W. Bickle. ough was lucky enough to get the play-off. Or perhaps it is more truthful to say that Jake Solomon and Ward Patterson put up such a battle on behalf of the city that Pet- erborough was selected as the cale for the final event.
