OSHAWA, ONTARIO, SATURDAY, JANUARY 7, 1922 ---- THE SPORTING WORLD HOCKEY SOCCER GOLF, Ete. Intermediates asy Win Have Over 'Cobourg Trim Eastern Team 7 to 1, Game Almost Ending in - Whitewash -- Home Team Indulged in Much Rough Work While Oshawa Sextette Stayed on the Ice (By Staff Rep Superlb/work in the nets by Smith, and hard, s work on the part of the forwards, gave Oshawa a de- cisive victory over Cobourg on Thurs- day night in the latter town by 7 to 1, Cobourg at times fought stub- 'bornly but were inclined to rough things up and as a consequence suf- fered heavily through penalties. The most effective man of the home team was Drumm who gave a fine exhib- ition of stick handling but with no one to work with him, he did not be- come dangerous. The score by per- jods was 2--90, 3--0 and 7--1. Smith Brilliant Having lost two games previous- ly, only a small crowd of speetators were on hand to see the game which, considering the heavy condition of the ice, was a good one to watch and was at many stages filled with ex- citement. Cobourg made several hard attempts to save themselves from a shutout and it was only in the dying minute of the contest that they found themselves in a position to fool the visitors' net guardian. Smith 'gave one of the prettiest ex- hibitions of his career, both long and close in shots being handled by him coolly and well. The Oshawa defense gave him every chance and he showed his calibre by turning the shots aside from all angles. A new face appeared on the Osh- awa team, in "Buck" Oliver, who is an expert with the gutted stick and who demonstrated that he is equally as good with a hockey stick. Oliver worked hard and his performance throughout the evening was highly creditable. This was Oliver's first 0. H. A. game for three or four years. Visitors Play Clean Hockey The winners suffered two penal- ties during the game, both for minor offences. Their style of play was de- cidedly clean, as in previous contests, and by adopting this method of stay- ing on the ice, they are always at full strength and therefore do not lose their effectiveness. The line- up has been considerably strengthen- ed since commencing the season, with enough material now for two good teams, making it possible to use sub- stitutes during a game without de- creasing the team's strength. In Thursday might's fixture .Manager Welsh worked in two subs guite fre- quently which kept the players fresh throughout. Flashes of Teamwork The forwards worked well together although there were only flashes of combination, The entire team has plenty of speed coupled with good stick work and if some fast team work could be developed they should make a stab, not only at the group championship, but the intermediate title as well. 'Rowden, in the minds of many, is travelling at a faster clip than ever before while . Smith at centre is the outstanding man on the team as far as back checking is concerned. The latter is in ex- cellent condition and quite able to go the sixty minutes. Riordon is showing marked improvement on the defence who, with Fair, complete a fine combination, which will give any forward line trouble in breaking through. O'Regan was a substitute but was used only for a few minutes.
