The smaller details necessary for the staring of the actual working of the shop were discussed and de- cided upon and Monday, November 26th was set as the first working day. Last night saw the shop in full swing and the cellar of the Rotary Hut experienced for the second time within a few months the sight of a Joneral destruction, But this time t was not its own members which were being disassembled but rather the intricate workings of rocking horses, tricycles, sleighs, hobhby- horses and scooters, Many a seem- ingly useless plaything was taken apart and the individual piecs were scraped, sanded and prepared for reassembly and repainting, Collec- tions have been made from the var- D | wney-Cott | 87 Celina St, Phone 1089 TIME TABLES A R------ pe ing effect 1201 a.m, ul on Bil except Sunday, a. Perhaps the most remarkable geographical feature of Australia is the Great Barrier Reef, which can be compared with the wonders and beauty of Niagara Falls, the fjords of Norway and New Zealand and the lochs of Scot- land. The reef is located in the northeastern part of Australia, stretching 1,200 miles along the Queensland coast, almost meeting the shore toward its mortherm ex- tremity, and running east till it is 150 miles from the coast at the southern end. The expedition has begun its work on Low Island, where every member has heen busy at a& variety of jobs, from sawing planks to carrying stores from the heach and erecting a wireless aerial. The members of the expedition consist of biologists, chemists, botanists, zoologists and geographers, special- ists in their respective fields. The leader is Dr, C. M. Yonge, who has spent much time in scientific re- search. The purpose of the expe- dition is research into the comne- sition and formation of the coral in i} > tion will continue work for a year. With the coming of the expedi- tion to Low Island the population was more than doubled, as there were only fourteen Reno previ- 'ously living om the a. It is interesting to mote that this was | Captain Cook's first coral island. In June, 1770, the navigator who put the east coast of Australia om the map--2,000 miles he surveyed sailing northward, sighted Low Island. But the Great Barrier Reef "closing in upon his track" was then still a secret of the sea. Cook could not know of the perils of the reefs, and om June 11 his vessel ran upon Endeavor Reef, be- tween Cooktown and Port Doug- las. The whole of the area is no- torious for the dangers and diff- culties that beset shipping. Hur- ricanes are plentiful. and few Sum- mers pass without disaster to ves- sels and ports. The expeditions researches will be among the coral and its pools and the mysterious mangrove swamp of the twin island, linked wih Low Woody at ebb tide. The reef has proved more desirable and more promising than anticipated by the party. Dr. Yonge considers that extensive research work may be carried out 'near home" (low Island); the island reef is so rich in life and offers a big field for all the specialists. Trips to other isles and reefs and ta the Outer Rarrier will be made, and dredsins in deep water beyond Low Island reef 1s on the program. The shore party is in charge of Dr. Stephensen, . chief zoologist, with his wife as one of his assist- ants. The work of this party em- braces the study of animal associa- tions of the reef in different zones. which are accurately mapped and measured.
