In place of the regular lecturer, Dr. Benson, of the Extension Staff of Toronto University, was the speak- |ca er and chose as his subject cer- tain aspects of Canadian poetry dealing rather fully with the patri- otic side. He read poems on the Diamond "|Jubilee of Confederation by Bliss Carmen, Wilson Macdonald, and Charles E. D. Roberts, Side by side with the last quoted passages from a poem written by Roberts on the thirteenth anniversary of Confed- eration showing how much richer the famous poet's genius had be- came in later years. He referred to Wilson Macdonald's spirit of ideal- ism. Even in the midst of patriotic fervour he could not quite exclude his bigger view of the brotherhood of man, Best Teacher The poet, insisted the lecturer, was man's best teacher. He convey- ed his meaning in the finest of lan. guage, and had a unique way of hitting the truth by a kind of poetic intuition, He referred to Thomas Carlyle's famous saying that the poetry of Shakespeare was of more value to Britain than the whole Indian Empire. Quite apart from the poet's private life, his teach- ing must have a strong influence on the mind of the appreciative reader. Roberts' Career The speaker gave some interest- ing biographical details regarding Roberts, At the are of twenty he was a Professor of Classics. But he was filled with an ambition to raise Canada's place in literature, and with his cousin Bliss Cormen, re- solved to embark on a literary ca- reer, Poet is Best Teacher 'Conveying His Message in Finest Language It was in that golden age of Can |adian poetry, the. decade 18965, bk wee Co -- came m the pen of Carmen, lam man, Wilfred Campbell, Dyn. ampbell, Scott and others, that Charles G. D, Roberts became one of Canada's formost poets. For a quarter & century Ro- berts travelled in foreign lands. He returned to Canada but a short time before. ¢ Canada's six- tieth anniversary, but his poem, written on that occasion, shows that though absent so long he had lost nothing of his passionate love for his native land. All through Rie. 'writings Roberts reveals a spirit of courageous op- timismy, and as the lecturer obser. ved, he is generally much more pleasant to read than that greater literary artist, Thomas Hardy, who Tated the reader with his pessim. sm. The ker quoted a famous English yon c a8 saving that Cana. da stood high above the other over seas Dominions in the realm of poetry, and recalled the remark sated the reader with his pessim. of one or two famous English poets, Canada's poetic flame would burn as brightly as that of Englind, In closing the lecturer read = very pleasing little poem of his own, The public dye reminded that the course proper will begin on Tuesday next at 7 p.m, in Centre St. School, The lectures will be =iven on English Literature, every Tuesday evening, followed later hy fen on Modern History, The fee for the entire course is $5 (pavable in advance), This is not merely a nrofessional or teachers' course and all who are interested are cordially invited to attend. ROYALTY CALLED FOR MANY TASKS Do a Little of Everything Even to Washing the Babies London, Oct. 29.-- When the Duke of York, during a visit to a publizhing house, printed a page of 1 book dedicated to his baby daugh- ter, he thus called attention to the widg variety and unusual nature of the tasks the royal family is al- ways called upon to perform, Frony bathing babies to operat- ing locomotives, the royal family's duties run the pamut from the us- ual to the weird, Although one doesn't think of a Princess in the role of wathing bab- 'es, even if they be her own, yet Princess tMary has bathed dozens and dozens of them, When she was training at the great Ormond Street, hospital, the mothers of the babies there took it as a great honor if the Princess washed their Infants, Princess Mary was expected to bathe every child at lewyit onee during its stay at the hospital. Princess Mary is frequently call- ed upen to act as saleswoman for this or that charity affair, She us- nally serves at a needlework stall, She is one of the very few sales- women who sell all their goods, for if these are any left over at the end of the sale, she buys them her- self, King George, however, doesn't have to buy the leftovers when he works in a charity shop: the reason fs that there aren't any leftovers.
